I'd have thought nice clean paintwork, use some panel wipe/glue/tar remover to ensure its spotless and then use some low tack tape to align it all as you want it. Mark the paintwork where you want the sticker to sit (with something you'll be able to remove of course) then trim it down if required (off the car) before applying slowly by sticking it down at one end and peeling the backing off slowly left to right/whatever. You'll likely need some sort of soft spatula/credit card type thing to press the sticker flat as you roll off the backing paper left to right along the car to ensure good adhesion and no air bubbles.
Failing that, get a wrapping company like the OP did

yup i already gave up and decided to give a mobile wrapper a call...early jan this will be done
