z4 rust!!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone...
i was wondering if you could all give me some advice on my little problem as i am having a rabbit in headlights moment and don't know what course of action to take
i bought a 2004 3.0 z4 from a BMW dealership (bristol) in november 2009. I have just noticed that there is paint bobbles on the boot lid. ...So i took it in to my local BMW dealership (loughton), and asked them to have a look....To my horror, i have been told that the whole car has been re-sprayed prior to me buying it and therefore doesn't have any paint warranty and that the bobbles are caused by rust under the surface of the paint. I am getting a full paint report from them when the car goes back in for its windscreen/rain sensor to be changed in 2 weeks time. What can / should i do... i knew the front bumper had been re-sprayed at time of purchase, but when i asked the salesman if any other bits of the car had been sprayed also, he said there hadnt been any other work done on this car... PLEASE HELP

It may not be rust but where the new paint has reacted with the paint underneath. Worse case you have to get the boot lid resprayed.
 
Do you mean you purchased it in Nov 2008? It will be key to how you handle this.

Sounds dubious that the entire car has been resprayed, but I guess since you are taking it back in and getting a full report then wait for that for definitive answers. I'd certainly then start building my case against the original dealer and would take it up with BMW UK direct by making some initial calls to them before approaching the supplying dealer.

If the entire car is as you say resprayed and is rusting and you only purchased 3 months ago, then I'd be looking for a full refund and start again.
 
yeah sorry i meant purchased it November 2008 , when i spoke to the service guy he told me that the paint guy had told him that he had thought the car had been fully sprayed and showed me the signs that pointed him to that conclusion.. ( overspray on rubber seals inside the doors, bonnet slightly off ( not put back on properly )so i then asked if they would verify it on paper in a full report and they said 'definitely' as they feel sorry for me buying a car under false knowledge of prior work. i love this car!!!! i don't want to have to search again :( but will do if i have to.
 
also...just to throw a question out there...but WHY would a car only 5 years old need a full re spray!!! ( i dread to think!!!)
 
From BMW surely it's AUC so comes with warranty on it? How can they sell it as AUC if it's not got the outstanding anti-corrosion warranty applied. If that was the case surely they would have said it, or pointed it out?!


Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Ie, it's not been resprayed, but just some perforation on a single panel, but making out that it isn't their problem!?

Wouldn't surprise me. I expect even BMW painters can be crap/not know what they are looking at. My brother had his car back to Ford FIVE times for warranty work on his Mondeo, each time they had done a crap job not up to good quality, yet supposedly it met their 'anti-corrosion' quality requirements :roll:
 
Major accident damage?

You should be able to reject the car under the Sale of Goods Act if it is not of satifactory quality, or fit for purpose. Think this can be done within 6 months of purchase.
 
This really is not what we expect from a main agent, even on a 4/5 year old car. Front bumper resprays are normal for road rash, but not the rest.

OK so you're 3 months in and reasonably certain of a full respray being done. Forget if it's rust or not that does no matter as you would not have purchased it knowing what you now know.

I'd start making calls to BMW and the supplying dealer to see what they want to do. Swap to a better spec. / newer model. Refund and compensate for inconvenience, etc. I can't believe you'll have too much difficulty with them as it's clearly a 'wrong' car.
 
Sorry what is AUC? ....i couldn't imagine the bmw dealership in bristol missing something this major in their 4,000 point check... Do i have to take them to court for Sales of Goods Act...i just want the car repainted and back to normal and for them to honor the paint agreement. This Z4 is my first really 'Dirty' and put a smile on my face every time i get in it...the only thing is...if they repaint it, i will be given a 118 for 2 weeks :( (not my idea of a fun drive)
 
AUC= approved used car, BMW would not be able to sell this car if they cannot cover this under warrantly I would think.
 
thank you all for your helpful comments, i will keep you posted on my progress. one things for certain..i am going to own another z4 if they refund me...cant get enough of this fantastic little car and amazing straight six ;)

Yep, thats where you want to look. Is the AUC warranty basically a continuation of the existing outstanding warranties on the car.

If so, then they should have made it clear the perforation/corrosion one wouldn't be applied.

If not, then that isn't so good, but why they would sell on a car that had not been repaired to BMW's standards to continue the corrosion/perrforation warranty is beyond me. They may as well just sell any old accident damaged cars if that were the case. The whole point of AUC is it's as good as a new one in every possible way with all reasonable protections/warranties in place!



However, I'm still tempted to say it'll actually not have had a full respray, and it's just a sign of corrosion (one off's, it does happen, hence them offering the warranty on it from new), but they don't want to honour the warranty on it, so making up 'stories' about a full respray! (remember, these are the same BMW dealers that let Z4's go over 2 years between services, despite the BMW booklet saying NOT to :roll: )

take it to an independant bodyshop and have them do a full inspection on the car. a lot of times the dealer doesn't know what they are talking about or will make things up so as to avoid fixing things under warrenty. Take the list the shop gives you and use that as ammo to get your money back or to have them fix it for free.
