Z4 ROOF URGENT HELP REQUIRED

I have just fitted a new pump from bmw dealer to the soft top . but sadly the roof is not working correctly yet/ the light at the operating switch is red and when you press the button to lower the roof only unlatches from the front of the top of the screen then stops . you can still hear the pump running but the roof wont move back any further . all i can do is press the button to close it . then it closes . so to be brief the roof will unlatch when pressing the down button . and latch close when pressing the close button . but roof wont open or close fully when operating the corresponding switches . if you pull the bowden cable in the boot the roof can be opened manualy by pushing it back by hand. when its in this position and you press the switch in the car to raise the roof you can hear the pump running but the roof will not close /move. it makes no difference either if the car is running or not . The shelf in the boot and micro switch are also fitted correctly . can some one clever help me please :D

Edited - as I re-read your post and had misinterpreted it. The Bowden cable is a good call... Though it sounds like you know about that. Are you sure you got the hydraulic cables connected the right way round ? People have gotten it wrong in the past IIRC. Also, is there enough hydraulic fluid in the reservoir ?

Can I suggest you don't post another thread and use the search function in this section of the forum (e85/86 problems) ? Just type in 'roof motor' and you will find the combined cleverness of the forum instantly as this is a very common issue

Actually having details such as model, age and what issues you were trying to solve by fitting the new motor might help us "Jo blogs" to guide you to solution.

:headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Any images of what you've done so far? Have you got too little fluid in the system?

I recently had mine out and back in, but I re-used the motor, which was far easier.

Thanks for your responce. Im new to forum as well . posted it it wrong sections at the start . . the cable is ok . the hydraulic lines were put in the same connections on the new pump as the old one .i filled the new pump to the same level as the old pump. the old was not working at all. how high shud it be filled to ? as for the lines being mixed up i dont think so because when you press the down switch the soft top unlaches from the car move about 5centimeters then stops.it will not open any further then when you press the close swich it moves back and closes .

The third same post in different sections! I know you want to sort this but this is becoming SPAM!

It aint spam :( in new to forum and posted in wrong section at the start . are you always perfect

You posted the same thing in at least three areas. In any event hopefully someone with an e85 can help. You can of course always use the search function as roof failure is common.

In answer to your question tho.. Yes ;)

I can't help with the levels as I got a garage to do mine, sorry. Maybe RJS-Z4 can help with that.

As for the hydraulic lines being in the wrong way - ok, I am sure I saw that it was possible to get them mixed up but not sure if it is because they changed the motor or not. Will have a quick poke around for the thread, if it exists and is not my imagination.

However what I do know is that the fact it unlatches is no indicator of hydraulic 'health' - the latches are electrically operated off a different circuit with a separate fuse - the natural tension of the roof pulls it up when it unlatches. Mine did exactly the same.

One last thing - you used a brand new (not second hand) motor, right ?

Right, daft question, but you've definitely re-fitted it all the right way up?

The motor is gravity fed,i.e the system isn't "full" as such. So if the motor is upside down, it doesn't work. I know this because when I tested mine out of the car, the motor wasn't the way up it was in the car, and so the motor mad a lot of noise and nothing happened.

Best bet is to remove it from the car, stick a couple of wires on the battery and straight to the motor connections to test (careful not to shock yourself though)

It's a very simple system TBH, and finding the problem shouldn't be hard. As bing rightly says, the latching is electronic and therefore nothing to do with the dead motor.

If you can hear the motor working then, I suspect, the problem is connected with the hydraulic bypass switch/Bowden cable.

My Indy initially had this problem when fitting a new motor last July. It was rectified by installing a new Bowden Cable and then it worked fine.

Removed soft top today and tested on floor . it opens and closes on floor ok :) . will fit back to car tomorrow mornin and retest again . will let u no as soon as i can the update :) . tested it in car today with direct feeds and it works ok in car with direct feeds . will do more tests tomorrow morning . the pump / motor is sitting correct way up in car also. and when testing on floor there is sufficent oil in pump when open and closed :)

Hello Bing :D ,, The motor is new. When testing it on the floor with direct feeds to the motor the hood will open and close :)

But when fitted to the car its different. There is a red light showing at the up and down button :( . when the switch is operated to lower or close the roof you can hear the pump running but the roof will not move ?..The bowden cable is pushed back in fully home as well . What does the red flashing light mean on the operating switch ? the rear shelf is also sitting and pushing down on the micro switch lever as well . hope you have some more info you can think of to help me ? its a 2004 model . there is also enough oil in the pump as well

-------AND IN CAPS TO BOOT!

I agree, caps on in written stuff is shouting but in his defence , instructions on Engineering Drawings are always caps!
Maybe the OP is Draughtsman??? :)

I'm a draughtsmen of sorts, caps are the plague of my life

How did you get on OP?

From reading your response about it working on the floor, I'd say it's either one of two things, when you installed it in the car it was at a dodgy angle, or maybe you're getting an over-exaggerated angle on the floor and it needs a bit more fluid to work at the correct angle.
