Z4 Roof light flashing

Roof has been up and not used for a few weeks, just last week the roof switch light began flashing took a video but not sure how to upload here. See photo instead.

Any ideas?

I read it could be a micro switch in the boot, does it look like something is missing from the second photo?

Is the parcel shelf in its lowest position? If it’s been raised by something in the boot or the position controls have been turned the roof won’t operate :thumbsup:

It looks like parcel shelf is in lowest position sitting on top of the plastic moulded ledges in the photo, I tried gently tapping it up so it would drop down if at all. Is there anything else I should do to see if I can reset the position?
 
There’s 2 dials either side of the parcel shelf in the boot, make sure they’re both set to the lowest setting.

It will only be parcel shelf related if the LED is orange.
If its red, it basically means the roof is neither fully open or closed. It's mid cycle and will be a Hall sensor issue on the passenger side hinge.
 
Make sure you hold your finger on the roof button completely until the roof is fully open/shut (a couple of seconds after it appears to have opened/shut) as if you take your figure off prematurely it can cause the light to flash.
 
I always have this in mind whenever I open and close the roof, I wait for 2 seconds after it shuts and the side windows have finished


- what can I do to move it if it is stuck mid cycle?

I can't actually say for sure if it's orange maybe because I've never seen it red? It's definitely flashing constantly as soon as ignition is turned on right until I switch the engine off at end of a journey.


I have tried pushing down gently on the top of the roof around the windscreen frame from the outside.

There's a cord pull along the hinge edge of the boot. It has a red ring that should be visible. Pull that & turn it 90 degrees. That should lock it into manual mode. It basically releases a bypass valve on the motor hydraulics, you should then be able to move the roof up & down manually. It is quite heavy though. You'll still have to use the open/close buttons to lock & unlock it from the windscreen. Try moving it to the fully open position then close & lock it then put the pull cord back to normal position & try the buttons again.
 
Ok none the wiser. I've checked the micro switch is being pushed in mechanically by the parcel shelf.

I've checked the shelf is at its lowest position.

I've also pulled the Bowden cable out and twisted. Then pushed the roof open button but nothing whatsoever happens. No noise or any movement.

Any other ideas? Time to get fault codes read I think.
 
Where are you located geographically ?
There are a few of us on the forum who will relocate the motor and can sort any issues in the process
 
Just to add I realised that I should have turned the Allen key in the central roof console. I just went out and unwound the roof manually using the Allen key tool and pushed the roof down and pulled it back up to then wind back home manually.

I then twisted the Bowden cable back into it's normal position and tried the roof switch but none the wiser. The upper light keeps flashing and no noises to be heard...
 
My roof did this a while ago, it was the micro switch in the boot. It had moved slightly and was not being triggered by the parcel shelf.
Try using a small screw driver or blade to hold the micro switch in while someone presses the roof lowering button.
 
thanks firebobby I hope it is the microswitch maybe I'll try the screwdriver later, however it looked to be triggering mechanically when I checked it last night, see photos of me holding the shelf up and then dropping it back down.

The other possibility of course is that the wiring breaks to the latch motor / hall sensors. It runs up in the headlining along the passenger side.

Thanks ph001 that sounds plausible as absolutely nothing happens when I press the button, not even the electric windows move.

I found in that thread the same (upper of the two) light is flashing, and it looks like the wiring can be inspected and repaired.

When I looked at the MS, it looked like it was being pressed in when the shelf was lowered. I had no functions when I pressed the buttons, just the flashing light.
That is why I had to activate the MS with a screw driver.
 
Thanks for your advice, I pushed the microswitch in with the flat blade screwdriver a few times, then got my friend to hold it in. Nothing changed. We repeated this around five more times and still got the flashing light....

then as I was driving back around 10 mins into the journey at a steady 60mph on the dual carriageway, the light stopped flashing. I haven't had time to try the roof yet but will report back any findings.
