Z4 Roof Closing Problem

Hey Guys,

I regularly use these forums for any guides/problems I have had before - and normally I find the problem, alas with this one... I can not.

So recently my Z4 roof stopped going all the way down, it goes 3/4 of the way down. I followed many of the posts on the forum, i've taken the shelf out and put the flaps down etc etc but to no prevail. It doesn't seem to be a mechanical fault as the motor was replaced not that long ago.

I think I've found the problem...

When I put the roof down it seems to catch on the grey lip. If I pull the glass back ever so slightly when putting the roof down it comes down.

Has anyone else had this problem? Where the roof slightly catches on the grey plastic (lip)?

Before the roof had this issue it was making a bit of a "pop" noise once getting past this section of the roof. It temporarily worked earlier when i put the roof down and again it made this loud bang/pop noise when the glass folds down.

As you all know the weather is improving, and I would hate to not be able to take the car out!

(For reference my car is a 2003 Z4 roadster)

Not sure what you mean by grey lip. Can you post a picture.

Some have had issues with the edge of the roof not folding properly.

Sounds like something is slightly out of alignment, difficult to suggest a solution without physically seeing the problem. You could probably bend it back, if you knew how it was supposed to be, but you could also wreck your roof for good. Not that helpful, but my thoughts as an engineer.

Thanks all for getting back to me so promptly.

This is not my photo but the top line of that red circle, it is the plastic "lip" under the metal catch:

The top of the glass catches on that plastic lip:

Do you mean the sides of the fabric not folding correctly?

If so I will investigate this tomorrow morning. I fear that it may not be folding correctly at the back - is there anything you can do to force it in a new folding position? - I mentioned earlier that you needed to pull on the glass slightly to put it in the correct position.

Might be worth spraying some wd40 on the moving parts and compare both sides of the frames

Will have a spray around moving parts tomorrow to see if it makes any difference.

It does seem like something isn't quite lining up properly, I will try to take some photos or video to show you. But because it is catching inside, it is difficult to capture. I have had stuff in the boot not that long ago, that I thought may have moved something. But I've cleared it out and ensured the roof "catcher" is in the lower position, as well as moving various things as well as taking out the actual shelf (with side flaps) and the problem still occurred.

It seems to be folding down in the correct position? Apologies for the lighting

You shelf is down yeah and your switch isn't faulty for it? Have you checked the manual release isn't out for the hydraulics? I would manual operate the roof going up and down see if you can figure it out?

:o that's isn't quite what I was expecting. I would check the shelf as above.

As said in the other post, I don't mind taking a look but can promise anything.

Yes the shelf is definately in the downwards position. Even when i took the shelf out it still had the same issue.
