Z4 Overheating

I own a BMW Z4 E85 3.0i, I recently changed the radiator and 2 thermostats. Yesterday I was driving normally and suddenly the temperature gauge rise to the max, the fan is only working when I turn on the AC, so what would be the problem?

Thank you

Hi, what year is your z4? :?

Sounds as though you potentially had an air lock. Did you check the coolant level after this overheating event?

I Had same on mine, sounds like not bled properly? (Not teaching to suck eggs, if already did this procedure But this is what i followed)

I Raised my front slightly (On Hill)
Ignition to Accessory not Running
Heater To Max heat
Fan speed to 1 (Min)
Undo bleed screw and keep topping up until coolant comes out the bleed screw
Replace Bleed screw
And job should be a good'un

This will work if you have an electric water pump, but the engine needs to be running if you have a conventional water pump :)

Pretty sure mine is conventional pump? 2.2 M54? But i thought this just got it bled into the heater matrix? That's where my airlock was as had no heat in car, bled then ran and sorted my issues. But as you say, id still run it after with main cap off to check levels and top up if necessary. :D

Pump the hose at the top with your hands and see if air comes out of the small bleed screw. That's what I did with mine and it's been fine for years
