Z4 on order

Hi all,

I've been reading the forum for a few weeks and have loved seeing people post their pictures up on collection day. The Z4 is a fantastic looking car and to see people pleased as punch to be picking theirs up is always a great thread to read :)

I've had one on order for about a month now but it's not expected to be ready for collection until back end of June so still a wait ahead. The dealer was telling me the other day that some have been pushed back to August (?!) but mine is still on for June. Half expecting it to slip after he's told me this though.

Can I ask everyone what their top tips are for gearing up to collection?

What I've done so far:

1) I've gone a bought a stubby months in advance!
2) Bought a plain looking magnetic tax disc holder
3) I've had a quick look at car insurance comparison websites (quidco). £550 is the best price I've got which isn't terrible.

Things I need to do:

1) Check the insurance out on the scheme which is linked to these forums. I don't have 12 months experience driving a 'sports car' or whatever that requirement is though.
2) See whether I can get that 7 days free insurance from the dealer on collection. How easy will this be? It's only a week but be nice to get the car then sort the insurance out.
3) I need a wire or a dock or something to get the iPhone playing through the speakers. I've tried looking what I need for this but I'm not seeing a dead easy answer. I'm looking to plug it in to the connection point in the arm rest and just get it playing through that. It would be a bonus if this also ran as a hands free kit but the music is more important. Does anyone know exactly what I need and can link me to ebay or something where I'm not paying BMW through the nose?
4) Should I be looking to get the dealer to supply leather protector and get the bodywork all prepared on pickup with a protective covering?
5) I didn't mention throwing in a full tank of fuel when I ordered the car. I want this!
6) Generally I just need to pick up as many tips as possible for the collection/inspection and make myself actually have a proper look rather than just jumping in and whizzing off!
7) I need to see what the deal is with hill assist and whether I can get something knocked off for it not having this.

Sorry this is perhaps the most boring thread ever for anyone who isnt me, I'm just trying to get everything clear in my head and any thoughts anyone has on this would be most welcome as I can pretty much guarantee you all have a much better idea of this stuff than I do!

Cheers all - roll on June!

Hi and welcome aboard  first off what Z you getting ?
1- just shop around for insurance
2- dealer will sort the 7 day insurance if you ask them for it should be no problem
3-carnt help with the ipod
4+5 probably should have been sorted when you done the deal
6-try a search on here for any info regarding pick up
7- think you might be too late with that one
Best of luck :)

Re 3) IPod Connectivity, you need the BMW "Y" adapter as you need both an Aux and USB connection for the car.

You can probably pick the cable up cheaper from e-bay

2- easy. Dealer should have given you a form. If they didn't there is a web link.

3. For our 2012 Z4 without Navigation, the part number is 61 120440796. eBay or dealer parts counter.

4. Probably too late to get that for free. Dealer did our car for free as part of the hill-assist thing. You can get similar products (or even the real deal) and apply it yourself for a LOT less money. Interior protection works and is worth applying.

5. You've already negotiated the deal. If you've signed the contract, enjoy the car and remember this one for next time.

6. I always check the VIN against the paper work. In the US we got a car where the VIN didn't match the contract. Getting that corrected was a nightmare. I look for lot damage or anything they could say we did to the car. I also check that the car was built as ordered. The warranty should cover anything that isn't working.

7. I think you are too late for a credit. It doesn't hurt to ask. If you are concerned about hill start assist and not just looking for money, talk to your dealer now. Get a demonstrator out and see if you can live with the car as is.

Cheers for the responses guys, I know a few of the points are me trying to sort something I really should have done at the time. To be honest, I just had a look down the dealer on the last day of the last quarter offer period on a whim and thought it was too good a deal to miss out on so I just jumped in. You live and you learn!

Regarding the iPod lead, I would suggest you get the original BMW one, or if going for a 3rd party one, take advice on here, cos I've heard of others buying from ebay/amazon etc and it not working correctly. Andrew has quoted the part number.

I'd still push for free fuel...they will plead poverty, but they do have fuel cards, so just ask your salesman for a full tank...or even pass into conversation something like "of course, I expect it will have a full tank" etc etc...if you don't ask, you don't get!

Did you get a Z4 brochure when you went in? I think Hill Start is listed in there, so you can still probably play on that for some compensation.

It was. This quarter's offer is nowhere near as good. No more free M-Sport...

I've driven the standard and M-Sport 20i back to back. The Seats, steering wheel and shifter make the car much nicer to drive.

Not a boring thread at all as I have been pondering the same questions regarding what to do and regarding asking the right things upon collection.

Yep, seen that wire. There's a few one star reviews but for the money it looks worth a go. I guess it either works or it doesn't. May as well wait for the car to arrive and buy it rather than buy one which may not work then send it back 2 months later.

The inspection tips are all good. Sounds like you had a crap exerience Randy. I wouldn't really know what to look out for. Smooth paintwork and seamless body work I guess! I'm rubbish at this car thing.
