As above, whilst stationary with the handbrake on i can move the car an inch or so and it make a clonk sound ? it also makes the same sound every now and then when engaging reverse/1st. Is it just the handbrake needing attention or something else ?

Could be any number of bushes/balljoints on the rear. Time to get under there with a pry bar and see whats what.

Out of interest how are you moving it?

pushing on the rear wheel, there are no clonking noises whilst driving though (not that i or my brother can hear)

The clonking going into first gear can just be backlash in the transmission, seems to be fairly common with the z3 but less so with z4's.

It can also be the play on the handbrake shoes. Handbrake shoes setting themselves in etc.
It's a dodgy construction.
It doesn't have to be the driveline or suspension.

This is impossible to diagnose from behind the screen.

Ran it up to our local garage and they reckon play in the handbrake shoes, pain in the arse but don't worry about it.
