Z4 M40i or not?

As my footnote shows I have a e89 3.0 and a ZMC. Both are quite lovely. But I have too many cars (nice to have granted but a pain on the wallet). So what about swapping to a M40i auto? But only in Thundernight with ivory. I have A 240i also so that might have to go as well. But it does mean I have experience of the B58. Should I get a test drive or will that ultimately mean I will have to get one on the basis that it’s fundamentally better than all of them. Looks aside though. Comments please. I am cruiser who likes to hustle through bends but not as stop/start hard acceleration etc

Why not consider a Gr Supra 3.0 with same B58 engine. I've had 2 now Auto and manual and both were great though the manual edged it for me. Lots of power, very comfortable, look good and hold their value well too. I only sold mine as i missed the open top mx5 which i now have but prob buying a coupe with the balance from my sale, so best of both worlds

I guess it really depends on what you are looking for. If you’re consolidating the three you’ve stated the m40 will cover them.

I’ve own one for nearly two years and covered 36k miles as a daily driver. I’ve recently ordered an electric car through work and the m40 will be kept as a weekend/ summer second car as I genuinely can’t think of anything I’d swop it for without having to give something up that the G29 has or does.

It’s the first car I’ve owned since I started driving at 18 (I’m now 52) that I don’t think I could sell. It’s just perfect what I’m looking for in a sports car/cruiser/convertible.

If you test drive one I suspected you’ll be hooked. Great colour combo btw. I nearly went for that myself.

It’ll be interesting to see how secondhand prices go once they stop making it next year. Theres already less on the secondhand market than there was before they published that fact at the beginning of year.

Love my m40i. It’s my daily and I never get tired of driving it.

As for the values, I don’t recall the e89 holding its value particularly well when production ended. I hope they do go up though!

What vintage M240i is it? I drove the new M240i when it came out and was underwhelmed buy it. Mistakenly I bought a M340i LCI. Both the M340i and the new M240i share the same chassis, and to be frank are good at what they do comfortable to drive, quick when needed but the total driving experience is really dull. My old M240i (F22) made you respect the throttle but the new M240i and M340i series you can mash the throttle and the Xdrive does the rest. After 2years of the M340i I've swapped for the Z4 M40i. I`m back in my happy place.

As an MC owner I'm obviously biased, but I could never go back to just one car now as it will always be a compromise in some way.

Good luck whatever you decide, and Thundernight with Ivory sounds fantastic.

Maybe with a Handschalter?

Maybe with a Handschalter?

I so love my Handschalter, oh that sounds rude ;)

Seriously, if the OP is getting rid of all those tasty cars, and just getting one, I for one couldn't recommend the manual more, it is truly fabulous and I love it

If you want a comfortable 2 seater convertible with plenty of luggage space for road trips and cruising the M40 fits the bill nicely, it looks good, makes the right noises and is fast.
If you want a cheap fun car buy a nice E85, if you want a hardcore sports car with ultimate handling a 718 will suit you well, the G29 is neither, its a comfortable convertible tourer.

It's much, much more than a comfortable convertible tourer. I've just spent a week in North Yorkshire and the Handschalter was hilarious fun. The only comfortable touring bit was up and down the A1 to get there and back.

You do have to think about hump back bridges a bit tho, the bonnet is loonngg.

I think it comes down to what you want. With the 240, Z4MC and an E89 it will holistically cover over, but not offer the experience of them all individually. There isnt a car that will unless you go down a 2+2 route like a 911 which would be what I would buy instead.

The E89 and G29 offer very different experiences to what I think a sports car should be, this opinion doesnt really exist in the market anymore, unfortunately, so may well be redundant. Both sit in the GT category and honestly have more in common with a 3/4 series than the E85/6.

I like a car to make me feel alive and connected. Your input directly affects output which is very rare in today's cars. So much stuff behind the scenes keeps you on the road.

Many who haven't owned more engaging cars may disagree and for a modern car they are about as good as it gets but for me doesnt hit the mark.

Great engine, fast, I actually like the way they look, good tech, nice place to be etc but the way it drives on a/b roads or for a specific car trip like a euro trip just misses the mark. Im sure you can improve just like the Z4M but out the box its not there. If a GT experience is what you want, then great. I would think it will feel similar to the 240, but obviously, you lose the back seats. The 240 you would give it the benefit of the doubt as its a quick entry-level car but the Z4, specifically for experience its not there like the older cars are.

If it were me I would keep the Z4MC its is a much more raw experience and is a compromise but thats what makes it special grab it by the scruff of the neck. The G29 is so far from this and if you drove them back to back there will be positives and negatives.

That being said if a new car is what you want there is nothing to choose from and the Z4 is compelling. Open it up to some older cars and it goes way down my list.

I test drove one when they came out and the speed is excellent but it just felt a bit numb and out of place on quicker, tight roads I could only feel was it drove a 3/4 series with 2 seats.

Also, the comment on a 718 being the ultimate hardcore sports car is pushing it too. Again, great cars, but they are so good that nothing moves; it's like a surgical scalpel, so if you enjoy that, then perfect. The Z4M is like a sledgehammer in comparison, a complete handful at times, which to me makes it more hardcore you really need to be on it when pushing or it can put you in a hedge. My dad has a 981 Boxster GTS, and it's much faster than the M in every way, but I found it pretty sterile. Place it, and the car just does it, whereas the M will leave you with a big smile when you keep it on the road.

He also has a 991 Carrera S and find this hits the mark really well. Its a super comfy cruiser and does silly MPG when you want it to, stick it in sport plus and its a complete handful. With the engine being over the back its a different experience to the M but along the same lines that still makes you feel alive.

I would bet money that the handschalter is closer to the Z4M experience that you would think and the handling better than any Z4 I've previously owned, and yet easier to live with than the Z4M.

oh what did I miss
Whatever you missed I missed it also. Sp3ctre dealt with it but I suspect whatever it was you may have dealt with it with tact and diplomacy, even though your car preference is to have an extra pedal.

sp3tre, you're either my hero or just beastly horrid

Tact and diplomacy are two words one would not generally associate with me :giggle:

I think that is the first post I have ever had deleted on here.
Many on other forums but not here.
I presume Mr 'daddy has a Porsche' responded, but I missed that.
My next aim is a ban! ;)
