Z4 M Roadster in Imola Red... Detailed *Revisited*

I was looking forward to this detail with it beeing a Z4 M Roadster in Imola red and my passion for anything BMW with an ///M after it too... 8)

Here are some pics of the car on arrival

Due to the minus temperatures I had to set about de-thawing my hosepipe and pressure washer.

So this is what i came up with

thaw1.jpg

thaw2.jpg

so whilst these items were de-thawing a started on the wheels with the usual culprits

wheel1.jpg

The wheel was sprayed with meguiars wheel brightner 4:1 and the wheel faces were cleaned with a swissvax and smaller detailing brush

wheel2.jpg

wheel3.jpg

the insides were cleaned with my new daytona speedmaster brush after my ez detail sadly died but the handle on the daytona seems a lot more firmer.

wheel4.jpg

Tyres are arches were cleaned with G101

wheel5.jpg

wheel6.jpg

And then the area was rinsed

My hosepipe and pressure washer had no reached a temperature above 0oC so the car was foamed with valet pro ph neutral snowfoam.

foam1.jpg

foam2.jpg

foam3.jpg

Whilst this was dwelling I went round and cleaned the nooks and crannies with G101

clean1.jpg

clean2.jpg

clean3.jpg

clean4.jpg

clean5.jpg

The car was then rinsed off @ high pressure

rinse1.jpg

Along with the wheels and arches too

rinse2.jpg

The car wash then washed using the 2BM, maxi suds 2 and a lambswool washmitt.

wash1.jpg

wash2.jpg

The car was rinsed again and then clayed with bilt hamber soft with water a drop of shampoo as lube.

clay1.jpg

Not much in the way of contaminents coming off

clay2.jpg

The heater came in handy for softening the clay to re-mould it too!

clay3.jpg

A few tar contaminents on the lower areas as to be expected but overall the car was very clean and looked after very well by its current owner

clay4.jpg

The owner had supplied me with the following roof cleaning kit

roof1.jpg

Which was used with the supplied sponge as per the instructions

roof2.jpg

roof3.jpg

I have to say i was impressed with the kit as it did a great job of cleaning the roof and removing any dirt and mould from the edges

I rinsed the car again and took the car inside and dried it using a miracle dryer and last touch

dry1.jpg

I then took some PTG readings and the bonnet and wings were showing signs of a re-spray

ptg1.jpg

ptg2.jpg

The doors and rear end were showing signs of original paint

ptg3.jpg

So starting with the bonnet under the halogens there were definatley defects present although it was hard to capture them fully on this colour

bonnet1.jpg

bonnet2.jpg

So after trying out a few pad and polish combos it seems there was only one combo that was needed to begin with

fcp1.jpg

Yep even harder than normal BMW paint so 3M Fast Cut plus on a 3M wool pad with a drop of ultrafina was needed.

After 1 hit

bonnet3.jpg

Still a few deeper RDS remained so another hit was needed

50:50 attempt

bonnet4.jpg

After more polishing

bonnet6.jpg

bonnet5.jpg

deeper RDs removed and just some holograms present from the aggressive polishing stage and these were removed with Menzerna IP3.02 on a yellow hexlogic cutting pad.

Bonnet corrected

bonnet7.jpg

bonnet8.jpg

I then moved onto the front bumper which was nicely swirled up

bumper1.jpg

bumper2.jpg

bumper3.jpg

Polished with a spot pad

bumper4.jpg

After

bumper5.jpg

bumper6.jpg

bumper7.jpg

bumper8.jpg

Pretty much all areas of the car needed at least 2 hits if not more on each section to remove the initial defects and this took quite some time with the paint beeing one of the hardest i've ever polished!

I then moved onto the rear bumper

The rear lights were also looking quite swirly

With the intital correction stage finally complete after 18 hours it was time to get the car ready for the refining stages

so as expected lots of dust with FCP

dust1.jpg

So the car was foamed again

foam4.jpg

And rinsed off at high pressure.

I also went round and removed the wheel weight stickers ont he inside of the alloys

wheel7.jpg

After

wheel8.jpg

I also did the interior whilst there was still some daylight, all interior carpets and surfaces were thoroughly vacuumed

interior1.jpg

interior2.jpg

I noticed a couple of small stains on the rear carpets

interior3.jpg

These were removed with fabriclean

interior4.jpg

Leather was cleaned and conditioned with the following

interior9.jpg

interior10.jpg

Interior surfaces were cleaned with G101 and dressed with 303 Aerospace protectant

interior11.jpg

Floormats before

mats1.jpg

these were vacuumed then shampood

After

mats3.jpg

mats4.jpg

With the interior complete I started the refining stage on the bodywork and this was one with the following

refine1.jpg

Meguiars 205 on a 3M blue finishing / hexlogic black pad @1500-1700rpms

Each panel was then given an IPA wipedown before applying the LSP of choice which for this time of the year I thought Finish Kare 1000P would be the best.

This was also applied to the wheels after polishing with lime prime and dressing the tyres with chemical guys new look trim gel

wheel9.jpg

Glass was sealed with Carlack68 glass sealant.

glass.jpg

The the fabric roof was protected with Autoglym fabric hood protector

roof4.jpg

the only afters I managed to get still inside the garage

Total work time = 28 hours over 3 days

Hey, what do you know? It's my car :D

Cheers again Pav. You did a fantastic job and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone here!

looks great, excellent job

PS When i had mine detailed I also had different PTG readings on my bonnet compared to other panels, but they have not been resprayed - Maybe down to the fact it was orginally sprayed lighter on the bonnet?

Excellent work there  How did you get the wheel weight stickers off by the way? And 28 hours, you detailers must be made of stern stuff, I need a lie down after 3 or 4 :)

With regards to price I won't mention the exact amount but it was considerably cheaper than any other quote I got. Considering the sheer hours that went into this it was almost criminal how cheap it worked out overall.

I had mine done not long after I bought it, but then left it for a year before I considered getting it done again - and in the meantime I'd just been regularly (i.e. every 2-4 weeks) foaming, rinsing, 2BM'ing it.

When I started looking around again I got one 'estimate' from elsewhere of 'a day or so at £20/hour' to do some correction work. So I assumed it'd be a day, day & a half, or two days max (at 8 hours per day) - but when I got him to do a proper inspection of the car before giving me a solid quote, it came back at almost £1000 for 5 day's work. I did ask for a breakdown of the quote, and explanation of the 50 hours labour involved, but strangely never got a reply.

I'd happily pay £250-£400 for that much work, and I'd love to get your fellah to do mine in the new year - as there's no way I'm going to get it done, just to have all the grit & salt back on it over winter - but it's a bit far from Reading to Liverpool, and I've got no garage for him to work in anyway.

No, it was £1k for a coupé - which has much more metal :P

I thought it was a joke too

Shiny!

I really should get someone to do the same to mine, starting to look a little worse for wear.. :(

Looks fantastic  Can't wait to see mine, blizzard conditions tonight so it may be next week before I get it back :(

Nice bit of enhancing going on there.
Just for the record, I had a slapped wrist for the banner so might need to remove that fella.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys the z4 is a joy to work on :-)

Using a tar remover called Autosmart tardis, a microfibre and patience!

Very nice job there that red paint really pops now and it just goes to show you do not need to spend a fortune on your LSP its all in the prep

Take it thats your E36 in the background looks clean
