My 2007 Z4 came with 3 keys as shown in the pic.
2 remote fobs (underdbodies shown) - Anyone know whats diffeernt about the one with the red sticker and which one I should be using every day?
1 plastic key - Whats the point in the having this key as there are already two fobbed ones (1 for everyday use and 1 spare)?

1) No different. It is just for drivers to recognise their keys. Keys can have different settings, e.g. air-conditioning. I use both keys regulary to keep the battery charged.

2) Plastic key is for emergency use (when both remote control keys fail). It has restrictions on several functions.

The other side of the key looks standard with the three buttons, top one - to open doors, the bmw logo - to lock doors, and bottom - to unlock bootlid.
How can one have different settings? and how do you keep the battery charged? I would have thought each time you use the buttons, you drain the battery in the key.

The battery of the key is charged automatically in the keyhole when you drive the car.

For example, you use the key with red sticker, and you turn on the auto mode of air-conditioning. The key will have this setting. When you use the key with no sticker, and you have the air-conditioning with manual mode. Next time when you get in the car with key with red sticker, the automatic mode will be selected when you start the car.

What else can you programme to the key?

The sticker is just on there to identify the key, as others have said. You might find the rest of the stickers in the manual. I've got the full set.

In my old E60, the key could also store settings for central locking, headlights, etc. via i-Drive.

There is another thread running right now with a selection of the possible settings by key and car posted. All depends on model, age and market what you can get, but it's a lengthy list. You can also find them all dotted around in your handbook.

Bob - perhaps the best illustration of why have 2 keys is for yourself and wife/partner.
As you use your respective keys on door opening electric seats automatically move to the desirded position, doors lock on drive off for say one and not the other, air con can be adjusted, etc. You would not want to mess with all that each time you swapped drivers.

Of course there are other driver preferences such as both doors open at once with my key but not on my wife's as she does not want anyone to open the door as she gets in. Hers lock on drive off for protection, but not mine.

You should have a pack of about 8 stickers of various colours. Gets real important with 2 BM's and 4 keys

Bob,

Read your manual. Your manual is your friend....

But in the mean time, here is the link that cj10jeeper talked about:
