Hello I am a newbie but thanks to your forum have fixed three faults already
Switch in boot for roof to open.
And replaced the cables in the compartment above rear view mirror to release roof catches as they had snapped.
Also coolant was low but looking at the forum alot of them loose a lil coolant from time to time from diff places.just gonna keep my eye on that one.
Problems not resolved.
Only have one key and this unlocks and locks the car ok but dosent do the full closer also is the roof down standard on the keys. I have tried re sycing the keys and the locks went up and down to confirm the process was complete but still no windows down when holding the open button. Could it b possible I do not have the master key is there a key that comes with bmws that dosent have this option as would really like to be able to open the roof by key if it's a normal option gor the z4.
Second had a look on the forums already but had mixed results in answers.passenger door dosent open by key but locks fine.the motor goes but button dosent pop up. Here is the part I got confused over.do u need a special tool to carry out the work on this.
Next things to do
Service what should I carry out in a full service and what plugs and oil do I need.
Roof down on key is only standard on facelift (2006 on) cars but can be programmed in. I think windows up/down requires key programming, its not a standard feature.
No master key, normally just two identical keys that recharge while in ignition.
Sounds like the lock on passenger door needs looking at.

I've had the exact same problem on mine for a while now. It's the lock actuator motor that isn't strong enough anymore to push the linkage up (still strong enough to pull it down however) I removed my door panel and confirmed the initial diagnostic.
Problem is that from the research I've done, one needs a special "BMW only" tool to tighten back a cable that needs to be removed to access the actuator motor. The cable in question is the one that connects to the interior release handle. My local Canadian BMW Dealer has quoted me 700$ to do the work!!
Ok I have tried reprogramming using the info on this forum and as in original post it locks and unlocks to confirm the reprogram but still dosent do the windows.
And ooh how to I get a loaf done on my 03 2.5 Smg to get the roof down on the key would love that.
Power on tap
Tell me about it I'll just live with it for them prices. But BMW quoted me 180 quid to change the two roof latch cables that cone off the motor above the rear view and this took me 20 mins top.if any one needs to know how simples n happy to explain.
Also could u tell me
I paid about 5k for my 03 silver 2.5 Smg it's done 117k full service history has had no expense spared on it by looks of receipt. Had roof motors changed had all services at BMW always had potenzas.is this car gonna b fine on this milage r they quite a sturdy beast.
Pics as soon as mrs let's me have a day off to polish her up nicely.wheels r real flaky though and as soon as I have the dosh new shoes for my girl me thinks
Cheers all
Don't think I've seen such a friendly forum yet legends

The Z4's reliability index is actually very good: http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Reliability.aspx?year=2003&make=BMW&model=Z4&trimid=-1
Someone on this forum passed the 200k mark with his and reported the car as sturdy. There is also a post here somewhere about how much mileage people have on theirs. You might want to check it out and read the individual comments there
Now, if anyone reading this post has found a cheaper way to change the actuator motor, I'm all ears...
