Z4 is starting to burn a hole in my pocket

To be fair, the majority of your expenditure has been for consumables, which any car would need, from your list, your Z has been pretty reliable, you just got it at a time when it was needing some major service items changing. On the whole, I don't think they're that bad to run, especially for what they are.

I 've spent around that if not more on 2003 3.0 SE .. Think its at that 5-7 year old car regardless the milage need a few bits doing..

My 04 audi tt cost me in excess of £7k to fix over the 16 months i had it - only did 6000 miles in it, even after an engine rebuild it was running like a bag of nails. The Audi co cars always seem to be the ones going back in against the bmw, though some of the mercs are a bit unrelaible.

I have come to the conclusion after having older cars it can be a false economy. Now only buy things that are about 2.5 years old - lots of people tend to chop cars in at this point, you get a few months manufacturer warranty to sort out any niggles and hopefully it has lost the biggest % of value by this point. Also have a warranty on all my cars, i know some say it is not worth it, but both my disco and M have been in for small things (but at dealer rates = big cost) and i would be £6.5k better off if i had one on my TT. Though would not have bought my M or disco had the TT not been so **** and cost sooooo much to fix. So it was sort of a blessing in disguise :?

The only draw back is having that extra cash up front to purchase something newer.

Sorted the window regulator thingy.

Took it to indy. part was 102 pounds, labour 80 +VAT pounds (1.5 hours).

We used to work with the BMW Telematics systems. The optic fibres being specced & installed for the 'MOST' ring that they communicate over had a life of 10 years. If they break down it would be a swine of a job to replace them. That was for cars going through design & test about 5 years ago.

The only time to go to a dealer is when you have warranty issues or to maintain the warranty. After that get quotes from indies and the dealer to compare. You'll be much happier...

As for Audi's....don't get me started. My A6 had 21 pages of service history, just in the warranty period. Complete new instrument cluster, two new steering wheels, two new window mechanisms, new sound system, and a multitude of other niggly things including a respray of the back end after some idiot ran a grinder across the back of it trying to polish it after a service. I didn't have the heart to get the rear bumper replaced after they dented the aluminum under the vinyl cover. I traded it on a Volvo XC70 instead....

I think you have had the car for just over a year based on your first post. 10k miles in a year is fairly busy use in my op. But that's from a London train commuter who uses his weekends only for fun. At about 3000 miles a year I hope to incur 1/3 the garage bills you have had. But no doubt I will be on here with similar moans at some point !

My thinking was that I could go for an older car (03) on the theory that low mileage will mean less issues cropping up. Not sure I would trust a car of the same age for proper every day use.

My car is an 03. I use It as a daily driver. Since Nov last year (when I bought it) I have racked up 10k in that space of time.

Total mileage 51k now. The car has more rattles than mothercare but it is far more reliable than the Mercedes I owned.

I noticed on my A4, everything went wrong at 90-100k...great car though. I put it through hell...

had my 04 z for a year, only done about 4000 miles in it, but its not cost to much in upkeep apart from the roof motor at £600 complete, its had two services a battery a rear spring and thats about it, for a second car i think thats not to bad.

You have spent alot of money on labour! IMO you should have done the following yourself: brakes, oil, springs.

The prices you have paid are stupid! £180 for oil service!, my local BMW does it for £130, my local indy does it for £75 which includes all the car been checked over.

I think you have prob just had a bad year but I would seriously start shopping around for some prices on having things done or buy a few tools for yourself; car jack, set of spanners, torque wrench and a socket wrench.

Also for insurance im 20 I found Bell the cheapest if you put down 2 older drivers on your policy without points i.e mum and dad or an older girlfriend :) brings it down alot. Even with that I found the converitbles very hard to insure unlike the coupes which are alot cheaper to insure but more to buy.
