Z4 is not well at all!

Started the car up this morning for the 5 min drive to work and seemed fine but when I came to a junction the engine revs died and car spluttered to halt. Restarted and the revs go up to 2k (normally start and hold at 1k roughly) and then drop down and it struggles to stay running, the car vibrates and the engine light is on. I managed to get it to work by keeping it around 4k revs which but now I have the issue of getting it to be seen. Anyone know what its most likely to be? :(
 
Sounds like it's not running on all cylinders. As gannet says, probably ignition-related, like coils or maybe a fuel issue. Also, some BMW engines have a mode which shuts down 2 cylinders under some circumstances. Not sure about Zs. Dealer job probably. :(
 
As above, ignition likely, fuel possible. Try three restarts - if the car is in limp mode that might reset to normal running until the ECU detects the error again. It likely won't resolve your issues, but it would make driving to the dealer less stressful.

Yeah am hoping its coils or something related. Gonna get it transported to Barkers over in Haslemere as no doubt the local dealers will be looking to make a fortune off me!

Slightly off-track, but have been thinking of getting a code reader, not sure whether to go for stand-alone reader, like the D900, or a pc link type like the ELM 327. Can you reset codes with the D900?

Yup. Very easy to use and can be brought on a buy it now price including postage for less than £25 on eBay. You can also do a live analysis with a passenger reading the scanner.
