z4 induction kits any good ?

you could potentilly drill a hole in the bottom the correct size to fit an additional cold air feed pipe and route it down behind the bumper.

i dont think many people on here would agree with that though :P

plus the cost of a k & N/performance panel filter is about £50+ i reckon

Cool as I say it was just a thought. On my TT though I didn't put a cold air feed in and the mod just uses the OEM Audi panel filter and it sounded sweet!

the Cold air feed was just a bit of a suggestion to stop drawing warm engine bat air in. the zed already has one but in effect i guyess it would do exactly the same as an induction kit.

did you put a performance panel filter in?

No mate just the standard audi panel filter. If you look at the graphs from Vag com on the link at the top of the page they are for the modified air box with the standard panel filter.

just kind of thinking out loud but to get a cone filter in there you could.

get a silicone right andgle to fit in the existing intake pipe and go through into the airbox to which to attach a cone.
cut a 3/4inch circle and fit an additional cold air feed to the bottom of the box (just for extra air).
seal the oem airbox up and there you go. stealth cold air induction kit lol :P

Just so you guys don't think I'm totally against cone filters here's one I'm running:

This is stripped down after a respray without its cowling, where you can see it clearly. After I'd fitted a different intake system, was concerned about water ingress and needed to let a 350 to 500 hp small block Chevy V8 breathe :) No hot air worries, but somehow I don't see this solution working on a Z4 bonnet.

Looks even better without the fairy lights :P

Your feedback on the airbox has moved this down the list for me, other plans at the moment. But I'm still going to look into it further - it certainly isn't something that I just think I can chuck in and forget it - the way a lot of manufacturers seem to suggest. Not really expecting any performance gains, but would be worried about any reductions... I don't have much to play with! May see about a custom mod on a bike system... if I get really bored.

Different Jeep Pawnsacrifice. This is a part way through the build photo.

I certainly think such mods need thinking about by people way clever than me to understand airflow, pressure zones and the complete induction to exhaust exit and not just assuming that because a manufacturer quotes some improved airflow in cf or litres/minute, it's better.

Hmmm... not me then! But yes, I wont be expecting these thing to do what they say on the tin!

(may just see how these other guys get on!)

So in order to find out the truth I’m taking the plunge, I have taken the plunge and bought this from eBay

http://www.pipercross.net/competition/products_venom.asp

It’s a cold air intake, a similar system to the existing but I’m hoping you can get the better rumble and increased air intake of COLD AIR.
I have had an ordinary induction kit on for a few weeks; although it sounds better I know it isn’t truly effective or good long term. The OEM filter is going back on for now then the next chance I get I’m going to whack it on the dyno with and without (I hope).

If the filter can bring the same cold air in through increased surface area with easier flow it is surely better for the car?

Mate, there's no end to the mods

Possibly something similar in the pipeline here too, be interested to see how you get on... although may well be ordering up by then anyway.

(I too have enquired about independent dyno run, for before and after - in the name of science)

i know, i keep thinking i need to stop and save up for a new zed but i cant help my self :headbang: :D

there is a guy in gateshead that does them for £20 a shot for my brothers forum, im going to wait until his next meet and go along with him to get a little discount :D

Just as an aside, these shielded induction kits are a right old marketing ploy. Between me and several other MGF owners we tried no end of kits and dyno'd them, and the K&N with a cold feed trounced them all (+14bhp) whereas the best enclosed system / shielded system could only muster +8bhp. Proof that a quality filter is far more effective than over engineered propoaganda :D

Indeed, we found the second best method was to use a panel filter, housed in an old 820i airbox (its bigger) and drop a cold feed to it, and that performed as well as all the expensive systems (panel filter £30, SH airbox £5, ducting £5!).

As an ex lola cars engineer I know a few things about things, and all this waffle about under bonnet temperatures is crap. As long as it's got good airflow on the move with a feed then there's absolutely no need for a shield, they're only worthwhile on turbocharged cars, and even then it's very minimal once you're on the move.
