Hi all

Z4 gearbox what a pig, notchy, hard to get in gear not at all good for
that quick gear change.
Is this normal on Z4s or have I just got a bad one :?

"try once try twice then hit it with a hammer" :D

Mine is perfectly fine. Maybe you need to go down to the gym every once in a while... :poke:

I drove a VW passat for 500 miles, I got back into the Z and I thought my gearbox broke because I couldnt put it into 1st for the life of me.

Takes getting used to

I guess it 's all relative to what you are used to ... compared to the Borg-Warner T5s in the Mustangs I've been driving, I find the Z4 silky smooth. 3rd can be a little stiff from time-to-time, but I never have problem with 1st.

Looks like a got a bad one then :(

my wifes rav4 6 speed box you can change with your little finger! so it not in my head :?

maybe i need a auto !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea. Problem solved.
THE END

It is firm, and dare I say notchy at times... for first make sure you deflect the stick left firmly before slotting forward :)

My biggest gripe is 1st -> 2nd which from what I hear is a PITA due to the clutch delay valve.

Have just got a new CDV from the good old US of A so will let
you know adam D if it makes any differnce to the gear change :)

lets hope :driving:

I had a new 'box on mine under warranty so it might be that it has a fault. What car have you come from?

had a 535d before and also a slk 350 on a mannal.
now that was a bag of poo.
hope yours is a auto 350 :)

I think the Z4 gear box is really fantastic! It's one of the big pluses for me! Really nice solid 'clunk' you know you’ve got the gear. Short throw - certainly have no issues working my way through the box at speed - love it!

I've driven plenty of cars with nasty sloppy boxes that just don’t flow. The Z is a dream for me!

Hi Wondermike

What was up with your 6 speed that you had to have a new one.
and what miles did you have on you Z?

cheers

It was really crunchy going into 2nd gear, worse when cold but still poor when it was fully warmed up too. It was also sticky going into 3rd gear too. I took it back to the dealer, couple of techs drove it and said it was OK, then the master tech drove it and immediately said something was wrong (this was relayed to me by service dept) so when I went to collect it they told me that a new 'box was on order from Germany and they'd call me to book it in. Couldn't believe it really, was expecting a bit more of a fight from them.

I don't think they strip anything down these days, just fit new ones. It took two days to fit the new one and there was obviously a noticeable difference. All done under warranty, they told me the 'box was £2500.

I'm struggling to remember all the dates  Car was May 05 and that was in Oct 06 IIRC. With probably about 17k miles on.

Coming from the vw Corrado vr6 I have to say that I found the z4 to be quite notchy in first and second gear. It seems that it is the way the car is though.

I had the six speed on my previous 2003 Z4 and also on my current 2006 3.0si and I consider the Z4 6 speed to be the best I have ever driven and that includes 2 911 Porsches...

Mine is smoothing out a lot at around 16K miles over the initial notchy feeling I experienced to begin with but is still nowhere even close to the gearbox of my old Honda S2000.
