My daily drive is a 525 diesel with 135,000 miles on the clock manual
And the gearbox is silky smooth completely different to my Z 4 06 3.0si which seems to be very nochy ! is this just the a characterist of Z4 gearbox? the clutch is fine or is it the c d v

I found the gearbox notchy 1st to 2nd i changed the oil and its better now. CDV makes the drive a lot smoother. You don't get the kangaroo effect. Whats the mileage on yours i had 62k on an 03 plate on mine when i changed the oil??

I got mine when it was a year old, and the first thing i did was take it to the dealer... they even changed the gearbox oil... which made no difference... they even said it will get smoother when it has more mileage!

Alas came on here and found out it's part and parcel of Z ownership!

The gearbox oil is meant to be lifetime - not sure i entirely agree to that!

It's a pretty normal characteristic. Changed the gear box oil and it improved slightly. Got some oem stuff left over you can have, although some have gone for an alternative.

Mine is a 3.0si with 24K on the clock and mine is notchy as well between 1st and 2nd. However it significantly improves after a long run of say 250 miles, really quite smooth between 1st and 2nd then. However, I have accepted it is just a characteristic of Z4 gearbox, so will live with it.

Permanent gearbox lube. I don't agree with that in the slightest. I say BMW is daft. I also don't pay any attention to the BMW recommended engine oil change intervals. I change it much more often. I've never known any lubricated machine that has been damaged by refreshing the lubricant. If fresh lube helps the shifting. Great. If not. It will have clean oil and perhaps last a little longer.

My transmission is recalcitrant as well. Especially when cold. My zed is scheduled for a big diagnostic in April to sort out a big drop in fuel economy. As well as finding the source of an "engine cough" that happens every once in a while. I'm having them change the gearbox oil as well. I have 40k miles on a 2006 3.0si.

Thanks just thought it would be smoother than my old Z3 doesn't take away my love of my Z4
