Z4 Gaz' E85

After a 2600 mile euro road trip last year in an un air conditioned Audi, I decided I needed something different, after melting in high 30's for 2 weeks.

I decided on a Z4, being a big BMW fan, having previously owned and dearly missing my E46 M3 and the GF having a E91 335d.

Bought back in July with 62000 miles on the clock and completely standard, still running the devils tyres, runflats.
Originally from Wellsway Bath, which strangely is where the E91 was also from.

Since then I have....
Fitted a stubby.
Machine polished and waxed.
CDV removed.
Fitted an aftermarket wind deflector.
Upgraded the crap stereo and speakers.
Fitted S2000 seats.
Recently pulled apart the old seats for the elements and fitted those to the Honda seats.
Meyle HD lollipop bushes.
De badged.
Lock blanks painted and fitted.
New rear bumper brackets.
Red film fitted over reverse light.
Refurbed some 108's(never again, lots of snapped bolts :-x )
MPS4 fitted all round
15/12mm spacers fitted.
New center badges.
Cruise retro fitted.
Eibach springs.
Treated hood with Autoglym water proofing.
'O2 pilot' mod to reduce oil consumption.
New Excide battery.

Pics.

Plans.
Maybe a rear ARB. Royal steering wheel re trim and ZHP knob. Other than that mostly overhauling stuff like bushes as and when they need doing.

Also plan on another road trip this summer. Only done about 1000 miles since purchase 9 months ago pottering around the South Hams, so will be good to get some proper use from it.

Car looks so good! Well done

I’m not so sure about the aftermarket wind deflector though, I wonder if it’s difficult/pricey to retrofit the factory ones?

Price and availability was the main issue. New all the bits cost a fortune. 2nd hand finding all the bits for sale is difficult. This one only cost about £80 and is easily removed without any permanent damage.

Cheers guys. Got to say I am really happy with the way it looks now, much better than when I bought it.

For got to say I also replaced a leaking rad hose, so did the water pump and aux belts at the same time.

Despite the car seemingly driving fine, one of the front shocks had no resistance on the down stroke when I was doing the springs, so need to sort that in the next week or 2.

Replaced both front shocks now. I was going to get Bilstein B4, however Larkspeed were out of stock, as were their suppliers and the wait was a few months to get some from Germany, so rather than mess around and possibly get the same response from other stores I went and ordered some Sachs. Didn't want to make the car any firmer than it is, hence sticking with OEM dampers.

Whilst there I noticed the front ARB bushes had seen better days, so replaced them with some poly items, and to complete things some Meyle HD ARB drop links were added to the list.

Whilst up on the ramps today doing the bushes I went and gave it fresh oil and a filter. Even did the oil on the 335 whilst in spannering mode.

EDIT, why has it rotated my photo?

Is the installation the same on the Z4? (Same engine I know but in terms of well... everything else!). Just looking into this now and figuring out how involved it is! And what procedures may be different from our cars to the E46

From what I remember it is exactly the same.

My car was using a lot of oil despite being low milage. Something like 1l in less than 1000 miles. Since doing this it hasn't been using any, but then I haven't really done that many miles in it recently to gauge just how little, if any, it is using now.

Mine uses as well. In that video it explains why the M54 uses oil. So I guess exactly how much is dependant on the car/person/driving style/etc. I think a few people have claimed no top ups are required. But majority from what I’ve seen have to top up. I’m not that bothered about it but would be a good mod... eventually! Hospital job :)
