Z4 G29 in da house

Got an 11 month old baby......Z4 in Misano Blue. M40i model with some packs. Replaced a TTRS as I fancied a fast open top car. Very pleased so far. Track pack PPF from Reep Southern UK, very nice job along with Gtechnic ceramic coating, Halo etc. Very nice people to look after my new addition.

Hi and welcome.

Misano Blue is such a great colour, but we wouldn't mind if you shared some photos with us!

Hello and thanks for a warm welcome.

I decided to leave off the wing m badges and I’m in the process of getting black boot emblems. One of the grey mirror covers is bubbling up. I would like to get own black gloss covers instead but tracking these down or getting a parts dept to sell them for a non-shadow line car is……difficult. Never had this with Audi, hey ho.

Black mirror caps towards the bottom of the page.

https://www.diversionautomotive.com/collections/bmw-z4-g29/

If not maybe someone with a shadowline pack could order replacements on your behalf

I take it BMW are replacing the bubbling silver ones?

Thank you Andy for the tips. I'll take look at Diversion's mirror caps.

I haven't had time to get it to a local dealer to see if its a warrant replacement. I spoke to the garage I bought it from and they suggested using the reg of a shadow line car. They are about 60 miles away so I'm sticking with local BMW dealers. I was going to buy a demo Z4 in frozen grey that had black boot badges. I'm a sucker for those. I loved the look of the grey but researching maintenance and protection, I pulled out of the purchase. I would have barely used it for fear of damaging it. No wonder BMW didn't offer the SMART paint cover insurance. No touch up paint, so its a panel respray, and good luck with getting the to match the rest of the car. Too much aggro for me. Shame. I supposed I could get a satin grey wrap, but the blue is here to stay.

The OH doesn't like white cars as 'they look like ambulances' she has a red car so that would have clashed, and I won't go near black paint. Although black has a mirror like finish that looks fab, its a pain to keep looking good and any scratch marks or swirls seem to show up more.

That left blue, which I really liked anyway, and before seeing the grey car, was my choice anyway. Its replaced a mid blue (Ara blue) coloured car. A theme has developed. Way back in the day I had a Triumph Dolomite in a similar blue colour.

Best, Jez

You led a very similar path to us. Frozen Grey was our choice but the reasons you gave are almost identical to ours.

OH already has a white car, so no to another one, doesn’t like red but had a look and still didn’t. Black, PITA maintenance wise and we had one as a demonstrator leaving blue, so blue it was. Very happy with our choice

The other option we considered after speaking to Beedub was a clear matt wrap over the blue which gives the car a finish the same as the FG one.

As if by magic, if you need info to order the black caps here’s a picture of mine

Hello and welcome, that’s a lovely example you have there

If you go down the black cap route, you’ll then be changing the grill surround and inserts to gloss black too. I quite like the satin bronze/champagne aspects however they do pick up fingerprints. Talking of which, what’s that on the steering wheel?

Ah yes, it was removed before driving away. Just a clear plastic protector for the wheel while they did their stuff.

Hmm satin blue wrap sounds really interesting. Locally I've seen another BMW (not sure what version) in a satin blue and I thought Wow!

I like your private plate. Mine is a normal number but weird in that the geographic location for registration is Yorkshire, but the plate was made up with BMW HQ's postcode in Farnborough, so I assume it was a staffer car. It had under 500 miles and supposedly had been used by someone who was unfortunate enough to be furloughed and then not taken back on, which is a bad show.

I have retained my old number from the previous car but it doesn't go with the BMW, as it was geared towards some Audis. I might sell it on. I fancy a private plate for this one, maybe I will change? This car is to keep. My thinking was that with the rush for milk floats (don't get me started on SF6 gas emissions from power infrastructure), a proper petrol head car like this will be worth hanging onto. Rant over :) Its not a daily driver, so mileage will continue to be low.

I'll be keeping the rest of the cerium grey stuff like, just the badges and mirror caps in black.

Presumably the plate begins with a Y

There are some real bargains to be had with ex staffer cars. My previous car was a BMW 630d GT and was an ex staffer car. It had every conceivable extra including X drive and would have cost £64,000 new. I bought it at nine months old with just 1,500 miles on the clock for £33,000 which was a veritable bargain.

I kept it for three years and part exchanged it two months ago for £26,000 so it was three years of very cheap motoring in terms of depreciation

Straight Six Vs 5 cylinder Audi - my personal observations. For me it was all about the sound with the RS. Didn't need the B&O hifi with a sound track like that. With the RS Sports exhaust and using the flaps, it made a big difference. Its the one thing I really miss about the TT. The car was little used, but each outing was an event. I understand the first gen 3 RS models had different software/mapping, so had more pops and bangs. Rumour had it that this wasn't good for the catalytic converter longevity. Mine had a revised software update. That meant less of the crackles like the early ones. However, it sounded pretty good, even booting it up to 30 mph, even in comfort mode.

The engine sound itself was also unusual, and I can now usually tell when one is going along a bypass nearby. It was the fastest car I've owned, and it was quick. Did a few tame launches, but that killed the exhaust sound. It consistently drew lots of attention from pedestrians, and cyclists but some obviously didn't like it at all. I absolutely oved it. Give it a boot in 1st, and the change up fart could sound like a gun going off. Hence the head turning. Being 4WD, it was easy to give some juice and the drive system and safety features played their part. I do miss having the exhaust flap button, that gave a stealth option. However, for me driving became more about the sound, looking to make the most of the exhaust and engine sound. Those 20" wheels were kerb magnets!

As for the M40i, I hate that flippin' fake sound thing. Will be looking to get a Carly or similar for that. I wish there was an exhaust flap control option, irrespective of driving mode. Moans over. Its smoother, and is more grown up, than the spotty teenager ASBO RS. The 8-speed box is a real pleasure, adding to silky smooth progress, with nice upshifts. I found the RS to be slow at shifting, despite being a DSG, and that included manual mode. Seemed a bit of a pause. I enjoy the Z4 a great deal, but I've driven less than 200 miles in it. My RS has the fixed RS suspension. Should have got the mag ride dampers. So many potholes and traffic calming humps it became an uncomfortable and less satisfying drive. The Z4 is also more of a challenge to drive with RWD only, which helps to calm down over-enthusiastic driving. Its a different sensation with RWD that I've not had for decades of FWD/AWD cars. I'm getting used to it and enjoy it too. The B58 is a wonderful engine, and I love it already. Tried some manual shifts that gave a bit of over-run sound.

One other thing is there are lots of gen 3 TTs around. Fewer and further between are the RS models, but looking at Autotrader, there seem to be many TTRS cars for sale currently and more than seen previously. The G29 Z4, well they are exceedingly rare. Only seen about 3 on the road. I had to go to a BMW dealer to see one in person, after seeing lots of YouTube films. I'm enjoying greatly that it not a common car on the road. Unlike the 2 a penny Porsche motors around Surrey, its nice to have a bit of exclusivity. I loved the original Z4, but I'm pleased with the G29 - Oh yes!!

Hello and welcome. Great engine choice but unfortunately Misano Blue is becoming very commonplace on here :D

If Frozen Grey was your first choice there’ll be a few matte paint owners on here that’ll say you should’ve gone for it as it really isn’t a problem to look after and protect that some seem to think (and continue to believe even though they don’t have one :zzzz: ). In fact, it’s the easiest car I’ve ever had to look after! No swirls and scratches from general cleaning that happen all the time with gloss paint. Mines two years old with 13000 miles and it looks as good today as it did when I got it. I’ve also touched up minor stone chips without issue so not sure why you’ve been advised there’s no matching paint? I’m very particular about my cars and would have no hesitation in having another Frozen matte finish if it looks as good as the G29 does.

Regardless of the conventional colour I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy the car 🚙

Thank you. I’m pleased to hear your matte grey car is looking good after a reasonable mileage. Yes I would have liked grey but the people I spoke to included some BMW staff, retailers and ppf installers all were wary of the potential issues. Some written and video stuff I saw was also negative but positives too. Of course the ppf people would push their product. My OH wasn’t keen on me having two grey cars, if I went for FG paint.

I get what you mean about the proliferation of blue. It’s more a lack of options with BMW. I had a plain vanilla model TT that looked very nice in Porsche Classic Grey (aka light grey). Viper Green is another favourite of mine. That certain German competitor gives a good range of standard colour options, but the range of their exclusive (a contradiction in terms) finishes opens up many choices.

I’m thinking now maybe I should have opted for a full car satin or matte clear ppf. Unfortunately like most I have to work with a budget, but who knows in the future. I’m sticking with this car, hence the outlay on the protection applied.

This is a great forum, having lurked a while before signing up.
