I should have plenty spare room, I'll take the coal

Nice one - I'll pay you back with beer!

Really looking forward to this. I've taken a couple of days holiday beforehand to get the car sparkling and packed properly. Went in to work today to find out my boss has booked a big case on the Thursday which I'm now obliged to go in for. Apparently detailing a car isn't a good enough excuse! :headbang:

I have Friday off work, and Monday. Jeez, hadnt thought about the car. Might just avoid driving the zed in May to get her tip top for the meet.

Saying that - the Moffat meet proved that no matter how good the car looks when you leave the house, it'll be filthy by the time we get half way up the road :x ......

We'll deffo bring a couple of disposable barbies and I reckon I'll have to go and get suppplies on Saturday, I wouldn't fancy eating any thing perishable that's been hanging around in the boot since Thursday morning.

Fold up barbie looks good value but I've already got too much crap in my shed.
+1 :D

Do we need to book the campsite? I've got my time off work booked, planning to leave about 3pm on Sunday to get up to Ullapool for the ferry. Will have extra space on the way up, though not on the way down though!

Yep we do! Which reminds me that's something I need to do later on too...

I'm short on holidays this year so unlikely to have any extra time off (other than the Fri) to prepare/recover from this trip. I'll just need to make sure I'm not planning on being mega productive on the Monday morning.

Yet again I phoned up to book a camping pitch. Perhaps I'm getting the wrong person, but she was completely insistent there's absolutely no need to book. Said the campsite's massive (which it is), doesn't have marked pitches (true) and they NEVER have to turn anyone away (which had better be correct...).

So I've not booked...

I also booked via the camp's website - I've now had my booking approved - guess they have had payment - but as Malc has said the MX 5 dudes are unlikely to be camping so probably ample space.

We're taking disposable bbq & stand & hope to do a combo of some food taken and some purchased in Spar local store.

A communal beer kitty / order might work but might be tricky to please all preferences & quantities !

Fraid I'm way too busy with work (& life) to take days off to detail the car before driving hundreds of miles - as Adamski says they will all be filthy by the time we reach Applecross !

Looking forward to this -though have a weekend break in Berlin first !

Looking good guys :)

Am I the only one who, on top of giving the car a thorough clean before leaving, is actively considering bringing a bucket and some ONR to make sure she's still gleaming in any pictures on Saturday? :?

Nope

Although not a bucket - just a small bottle. I spent 3 weeks and 2500miles touring Germany, France and Switzerland in my campervan last summer and refused to go 3 weeks without washing it. Chemical Guys waterless car wash stuff for me: http://www.chemicalguysuk.com/product_p/one.htm. Don't know I'll bother on this trip unless there's some stunning weather for photos, etc.

We have a cool bag and I should be able to get a hold of a cool box which I'll stack full of frozen gel packs before we set off. It'll help provide somewhere cooler for food. Expecting to have a couple of disposable bbq's and some supplies in there. As far as I can tell there'll be plenty of room for stuff.

And I thought I had OCD

I've booked the campsite too, just me and my tent is comically small so should have some spare space on the way up if needed.

I like this miracle in a bottle waterless wash. I may buy some and take with me ;)

Hmm I have my doubts and worries about this waterless wash stuff, I have read the blurbs on them but can not comprehend wiping dirt across my paintwork without stressing about light scratches and swirls. It has taken me nearly 2 years to rid my car of swirls I would crap myself using this stuff. I would rather suffer a dirty car than risk it.
Or am I just paranoid

I know it's a bit off topic but I completely agree. I'm not a detailer but waterless washing sounds like the perfect way to micro scratch the top coat to me! :idunno:

Continuing the off-topic, but believe me if they scratched the paintwork I'd certainly not be using this sort of product. Fair enough I played it safe and tested it on the van first rather than the Z4, but - and as always with car cleaning - it's the technique more than the product that could cause the damage. I'd not contemplate using it on seriously dirty paintwork (see the Chemical Guys website in the link I posted of the product - scary), but for a bit of road grime it's fine. Over 3 weeks and 2500 miles in the van I "washed" it twice then gave it a quick tidy while boarding the ferry back home (to some strange looks...). Before using it on the van I ensured I had a good layer of wax beforehand which I believe helps too.

Right, back on... I've updated the list in the first post - hopefully I've got it correct.

Highland Council (Update 11-4-12)
Re-opening of A890 Stromeferry Bypass

Wednesday 11 April 2012 - Gordon Fyfe

Highland Council Press Release

Date pencilled in for re-opening of Stromeferry By-pass

Work on making safe the A 890 road between Lochcarron and Kyle following a major rock fall in December, last year, is nearing completion and The Highland Council is targeting Monday 23 April for a full re-opening of the route.

From Saturday 14 April, work will commence on dismantling and removing the holdfast units and barriers on the adjacent Strathcarron – Kyle railway line, which have enabled traffic to be diverted on to the railway line between 7 am and 7 pm under a traffic management system dictated by the train times.
From this date, traffic will be taken one-way in convoy through the road between 7 am – 7 pm with no restriction on weight.

From Monday 23 April, the road will be open 24 hours a day, with traffic control measures implemented as required during daylight hours to allow the completion of the de-vegetation works along the length of the road and removal of the contractor’s site compound.

Drivers should still anticipate delays, which will be dependent on the works being undertaken. There will be no restriction on traffic movement.

The holdfast units were introduced on Monday 26 March to allow the road to partially reopen, having been closed from 22 December last year following a rock fall. The partial opening of the A 890 was possible because of modification works to the railway track which allow road vehicles to share the railway track with trains under a traffic management system. This has allowed vehicles to be diverted on to the railway line at the location of the rockface stabilisation works. The diversion is designed for local traffic only and a 7.5 tonne weight restriction is being applied strictly.

Neil Gillies, Director of Transport Environmental and Community Services with The Highland Council, said: “Good progress is being made in making safe the rockface and unless we hit an unforeseen hitch, the road will reopen fully from Monday 23 April. This should come as very welcome news to the local community, to Highland businesses and to people visiting this popular part of the Highlands. This has been a most challenging project and the contractors, TRAC Engineering Ltd, and our consultants, URS, and Council staff are to be commended for their round-the-clock efforts to reopen the road as quickly as possible. I would also like to thank the local communities most affected by the closure and partial closure of the road for their understanding and patience.”

Following the road closure, the Council commissioned a car ferry and a passenger ferry to maintain links between Lochcarron and Stromeferry and an early morning train service between Strathcarron and Kyle was organised by Scotrail to take pupils from Applecross, Kishorn and Lochcarron to Plockton High School in time for the start of the school day. These were withdrawn when traffic was diverted on to the railway line.
