Z4 Forum Euro Roadtrip '10?

If you're there at 0730, there is no queue. At 11:30 there will be a massive queue, and the track will be busy. Your call.

That makes it a bit difficult then.

Not really. Quite often the 'ring is still under a blanket of snow in March.

The way to do it is to plan for a general time of year, like just before or after the summer holidays, pick a couple of weekends and block them out, then when the TF guide is published, you just go ahead and commit everyone on those dates. You can still get all the planning out of the way.

Thats all well and good, but it's difficult to just say a rough time of year, because some people need to book time off work well in advance, and if we won't find out til March and are planning to go May time or something, it doesn't give much prep time, especially when you can't book ferries/hotels until you know. Nevermind, we have to work with it.

What sort of time of year do people fancy then? I'm not too bothered, but by choice would probably say late April/May. Though, how many need to go during school hols?

I haven't read any of these posts so i might be repeating what others have said but.................

I'm off to Monaco for the Grand Prix on the weekend of the 16th May. I'm going with another z4mc (M44ttg - silver grey/red with supersprint, gruppeM, real carbon roof etc etc).

We go every year, drive down through Holland, Belgium and Germany, into Italy and and along the very cool Italian Riviera (through the awesome tunnels) and 30 mins drive into France to Monaco. We stay in a cheapo place in Nice that has an underground car park.

After the race it's up to Nurburg for a night or two and then usually Cologne on the way home - great place for a night out.

Usually cross from Newcastle to Amsterdam - it's actually easier than heading to Zeebrugge - and we always avoid France as the Gerdarmerie don't like fast driving too much!

Tell me if this appeals and we can try to tie it down.

Sounds good. If i understand right, not too many nights either, for those how didn't wanna go for ages.

It's each to their own. We tend to go for about a week and take a couple of days to get to Nice. Usually only go for raceday as practice/Qualifying is not a patch on raceday. Amazing atmosphere and a "must do before you die" sort of event.

Looks a bit like this...

Wednesday if you don't rush orThursday if we do - Overnight Ferry
Friday - Driving about 500 miles down the autobahns (last time we stayed in Zurich, time before St Moritz which was a bit too far and very tiring)
Saturday - remaining 200 miles through Switzerland and Italy Night out in Nice
Sunday - Race Day
Monday - drive to Adenau (stay at the Hotel Blau Ecke)
Tuesday - Nurburgring day then drive up to Cologne for a night out
Wednesday - sleep till lunch (hangover) drive to Amsterdam
Thursday - boat home

1 week, 1500 miles - Autobahns, Swiss alpine passes, Italian tunnels, the greatest Grand Prix of them all, the World's best road racing circuit, Night out in the amazing city of Cologne and a few hours chilling in Amsdterdam.

Sweet - easy peasy!

+1 to that. Do you have an idea of rough costs from your last run?
Would be good to know if i can actually afford it alongside sailing in Turkey next year...

Can't do anything that's not in the summer holidays, unfortunately. The downside of having huge holidays is they're fixed. Nevermind! :P

Yeah, sounds ok, I guess. :P

Like someone said, can you give us a rough idea of cost, it'll just help a bit.

Spud - Is easter no good for you?

They're very rough costs but here's what i reckon..........

Ferry £250 for car and 2 passengers
Hotels average £55 a night. 6 nights so around £330.
GP tickets - from £120 to £475 - the good stuff is about £350 a ticket. Ridiculous but worth it!
Fuel - 8 tanks (1800 miles) in an M and less in others. Approx £320.
Food and booze - £200
Ring tickets for 4 laps - can't remember but around £50

Rough total - £1270-£1675

It would be a little cheaper for Southerners to cross either by the Tunnel or Dover/Calais. I'm in Glasgow and we always do the Amsterdam/Newcastle route as it's amusing, cheaper than Scotland/Hull crossings and we don't want to drive 450 miles to the South Coast as it's a crappy drive.

You could also get hotels for less if you really wanted but they'd probably be poor.

I'd suggest we ask Roadtrip to recommend some on the way as he's Mr Europe!

Yeah, but obviously the timing is tighter. And obviously you'll get much better driving weather in the summer!

Anyone crossing Portsmouth/Le havre I can recommend LD Lines, mainly because they leave a lot more room between car rows than other ferries, so you don't get all those w*nkers dragging their duty-free and handbags down the side of your car like it doesn't matter! :headbang:

I'd be up for a trip to the Alps, its great driving through the passes and up the windy roads...... ive done it in HIRE cars (crap ones) and id love to do it in the Z4.......... Rear wheel action !!

Well, there's no reason we we can't do a three-way split after the 'ring -- those who want to go to the Grand Prix (or whatever) can go there and those who want a bit of a drive can tag along with Spokey no-mates.

OK, just re-read the Grand Prix thing and it's in reverse order to my idea, so that would probably have to be a different trip. :(

OK, to try and keep this tidy, I'll bow out of this thread and leave it for those who are keen on the GP version of the trip.

I've started a new thread here.
