Dear Philippe,
I hope you don’t mind me contacting you. I found your email address on the BMW forum, where you wrote about your experience with EPS (electric power steering) problems, and I was hoping you might be able to give me some advice.
I own a 2003 BMW Z4 E85, and I have been its first owner since new. I really love this car, which is why I am doing everything I can to get it back into perfect condition. My car had the well-known “sticky steering” problem, which my mechanic managed to fix by adjusting the worm gear in the steering column. Unfortunately, I was then unable to drive the car for quite some time, and when I started using it again, fault code 611C appeared. Since then, the electric power steering has stopped working completely. The steering wheel is now extremely heavy, making the car almost impossible to drive.
I read your forum post describing how your EPS problem turned out to have several different causes – first the EPS control unit, then poor ground connections, and finally a worn front control arm bushing that affected the DSC system. Because of that, I wanted to ask whether you think any of those issues could also be related to my case.
Have you ever come across fault code 611C, and do you know exactly what it indicates? Do you think this could be a fault with the EPS motor or its control unit, or would you recommend first checking the suspension components, ground connections, the steering angle sensor, or the DSC system?
I would be very grateful for any advice or experience you could share. I would really like to avoid replacing the entire steering column if the problem might actually be somewhere else.
Thank you very much for your time, and I sincerely appreciate any reply.
Nicole
