Z4 electical problem.

Hello I hope someone can help? I'm not sure if the two are lelated, but I fitted a new starter yesterday as mine packed up. Today it ran fine for a while and then warning lights started lighting up. Slowly but surely nearly all of them came on and then the power steering failed, radio went all sorts.

I got home, turned off the car had a think then when I went back to it again, it started. Fine and then after a few minutes everything died again. I'm lost. Any ideas?

I did notice that the smaller wire going in to the starter was a bit loose so I tightened it up but it made no difference!

Help!!!

Not 100% but I think the main battery to the alternator bolts onto the starter solenoid too. Sounds like you have left it off.

The reason you are getting the warning lights is as the battery goes flat things start to shut down.

Maybe, although there were only two wires going to the solinod. The positive and then the smaller wire. I read somewhere that the 3.0l only has the one smaller wire but I am aware that some have two. I've had a good look and can't find any stray wires.

Could I possibly have put the smaller wire on the wrong side?

Oh, ok then. I really can't think of what I could have done to stop the alternator charging the battery? Like you said, it's as if I've not connected a wire.

I believe you put the terminal wires on wrong. Two of the wires have to go onto the same terminal. What is happening is that the starter is spinning up and not stopping. It will continue spinning, drain the battery until it goes flat.

Check the terminal wires. There are two stubs on the starter. The two terminal wires go onto ONE of the stubs.

What your saying does make sense, but I can't find any other wires anywhere and I only saw the pos wire and one other when I was taking it off. It's the 2004 3L.
