Z4 E89s becoming rare

Just an observation, when I started looking for a low mileage 35i manual a couple of years ago there were typically 1200+ E89 Z4s listed on AutoTrader. That number was closer to 1000 last year (I know, obsessive watcher ) and this year we're down into the 700-800s.

I'm now in 2 minds. I reckon in 5 years time the numbers listed at any one time will be in the low 100s and the value of well looked after models with all the nice to haves, iDrive etc, will stop depreciating and perhaps even start to grow in value... although I think for a real upturn in value we're probably looking well into the 2020s.

So, do I continue to use mine as a daily and just enjoy driving it but running up the mileage, or do I garage it through the winter, drastically lower the annual mileage, retain its potential future value and use it as a summer play thing

Can you explain how the new model could drive up or firm up prices of E89’s. Can’t see it myself. If anything it would be the other way.

Was thinking the same. Isn't a new model release usually the reason why the dealers dump the old stock at clearance prices ('run out specials')? Haven't seen it cause old models to appreciate in value :?

Yes, I'd totally agree usually, but having seen the videos and pix of the 2019 Z4 I won't be rushing to sell my E89 to buy one. It resembles more a face lifted current car (which, let's be honest never sold in large numbers although we all love 'em) rather than a new vehicle.

Massive opportunity lost for BMW. Maybe it's different when you drive it?

On the price appreciation you just have to look at mint Z3s or Z4Ms to see what rarity and condition do for value. It'll take time but good Z4s will eventually command a premium. Having said that I've been using mine as a daily since I got it and that's not about to change... I was toying with getting a 4x4 for the winter but I'd miss sitting in the z4 cockpit

None this has anything to do with to do with a newer model being released though. These prices will have gone up under their own merit.

Definitely not the only one. Love or hate the new model it will always split opinion with soft top versus hard top so you will loose 50% of the market straight away. Add to that the soft top lovers who just don't like it and I think sales will be low thus creating a demand for the current models. I suspect when people see it in the flesh opinions might change slightly one way or the other but I don't like it even if it did have a hard top. Nobody is getting their hands on mine any time soon.

I'll be honest I never considered an E89 - because I was desperate to get an E86.

Then yesterday I went to look at one nearby on someone else's behalf and quite liked it. Loved the performing art of lowering and raising the roof. :lol:

Maybe I need to drive one, or maybe I'd better not! :roll:
