Z4 E89 Rear Camera

Any recommendations for a great rear cam for the E89? And how easy would it be to install it. I want the rear cam to operate when shifting into reverse gear. Maybe also the option to switch it on manually through the navigation screen.

First time poster - apologies if this has been asked here previously (I couldn't find it). Thanks! :thumbsup:
 
Welcome, and to your first post.

There are add-on modules that will do what you're wanting to do. Some are quite expensive (£500+) and some are much cheaper (£150+ on Allibaba.com) depending on how you like to do business.
Unless someone comes up with a "go-to" answer, then I'd be Googlling "BMW e89 rear camera" and do some reading (you can also have a front camera!!)

Thanks! Yes, a front cam would be cool, too. Really depends on the price.

I saw some cheaper rear cams (about £40) but wasn't overly convinced. Following your advise and price guide, I found these below.

My recently acquired 2012 28i has a rear and forward camera attached, installed only 12 months ago. Having a reverse camera is great but the forward camera is perfect for nose in parking. Unfortunately the details I have don't reveal the brand of cameras or video interface but the installers website might reveal more www.drivesound.com.au Obviously this is for info only as Im in Australia but the expensive bits were the Video Interface and installation. All up $A1500.00

I have no idea where that panel takes you but from what I do know it doesn't give you access to the rear bumper, see photo.....20161017_115222_zpsppnfsciq.jpg
 
newbie question: do I need a 4 pin relay for voltage or just simply connect the cam's 12V wire to where?

this is the cam wiring and the video unit takes care of switching the view when in reverse

yeah, I only wanted to fish/lead cables through the wholes, but it takes removing almost all the boot trim just to remove the apron cover
I figure it is not worth as it may not even let me do what I want, so going the bumper way
 
pls ignore, I'm getting power and ground for the cam from the video unit :headbang:

all I need is to lead these wires back to the boot and connect to the cam

plus pray that reverse is detected via CAN-BUS (but got the wire for that too from the device, if not)

so, who needs a 4-pin relay? :rofl:
 
It's an Add-A-Fuse Mini Piggyback fuse holder, and it goes in the fuse box. You remove a fuse and plug that into the lower two holes (closest to the blades) then put you new fuse for the circuit you are adding into the top two holes. Then you plug it back into where the fuse came from, but you have to get it the right way round. I used fuse 69 which is a permanent live, with the new wire pointed to the left.

camera wires are in the boot :)

I didn't expect to remove the tyres to be able to do this part:

lost a lot of time trying to do it like Dave, there was not enough room and couldn't see the screw at all

had to take off the tyres (19") at the end :x

at least I can continue tomorrow :D

gear is detected via CAN-BUS and the usual expected stuff

and I didn't lose Android projecting to CID either :D (same device for cam and HDMI)
 
front cam option is interesting - how is that input triggered? or is it always live on ignition and just selected by input on the stereo?
