Z4 e89 broken into silently!

Came out of the house this morning to find my windows an inch down on my Z and the doors unlocked, the cubby holes had been opened and rifled through. Nothing gone as nothing of value (roll of duct tape, some tyre weld, high vis jacket and an iPod cable…)

Anyone know how this was done? External OBD access? RF cloning?

Time to buy some security cameras…
 
That blows. Sorry about that.

Last week on the telly, there were talking about thieves intercepting the signal between the car and the remote during locking/unlocking. Then they programme a new fob, and Bob’s your uncle. I don’t know how car manufacturers would retrofit the system to avoid that. They said to avoid using the remote in public spaces, car parks, etc.
 
I believe that keeping your remote(s) in a metal box (faraday cage) prevents the signal being intercepted, or is that an old wives tale?

That is to prevent thee collection of signal for comfort access equiped cars

Many possible reasons..

Are you sure you locked it?

Are you in a built up area where someone could have seen you lock your car ?

As you lock the car a thief can ‘grab’ the unlock code using an RF receiver..

On E89s it’s relatively difficult to start the car without the key, easier to break in.
 
I suppose I can’t be 100% sure I locked it… but I am usually very careful to check.

Very reassuring to hear that it is harder to start than enter. I will continue to keep nothing but valueless trinkets and early 2000s technology in there (thankfully my iPod classic was in the house!!)
 
But if you had not locked it, why would the window be down a bit?

I did think that - but wondered if maybe the doors weren’t 100% closed (maybe they shut them quietly and didn’t click all the way), as they pop down that much when you open them anyway.
 
Does the interior light go off after a while? Otherwise you would have had a flat battery I would have thought.

1 This happened to me twice in different cars.
2 I told my next door neighbour, who's a prison officer.
3 He said his inmates tell him why: 'Lots of people don't lock their cars and a couple of hours late-night handle-trying always pays enough to be worth it.'
 
The door trying thing I see regularly, but with them looking like they just came from one of the boats nobody gets involved.
 
Did you accidentally press buttons.
I'm sure someone can say but does the double press drop window an inch before it drops for ease of access. Never used the feature.
Otherwise how do you know you activated that feature before door opening.

That drops the windows much more than an inch from memory :thumbsup:

I know i have done it by not realising i pressed button twice, but does it drop half or fully down as you open the door.
Try later.
 
I would be very surprised if someone used a high tech signal interceptor to break in and have a rifle around for the odd coin or two.

Normally only for stealing the car would they go to those lengths IMO. Probably left the car unlocked, opportunist 'handle tryer' found it unlocked and had a look for enough money for a hit of Heroin, or a can of Special Brew.
Then shut the doors gently to not attract attention so didn't trigger the windows to raise.

I had this years ago on a Vauxhall Omega. Similar thing; they just had a look for money as there was lots of other stuff in the car but that was untouched. Came out in the morning to find both front doors wide open.

It's worth remembering that insurance won't pay out if the car is left unlocked, ever! :)

The window moved down electrically before he pulled the tape! Read the comments.
