Z4 e89 35i software update

There might not be a an update if what you have on the USB stick matches what is currently running. If I go to https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html and type my vin it says there is a s/w update but I already instlled that s/wversion over the air a week or so ago.

The website merely states that compared to the version that was installed on build date there is a later version available...the web site has no concept / ability to track subsequently what changes were made where and when...

The system, unusually, allows you to retrofit old versions of the s/w as well as newer ones in the dialogue box..

What version of s/w is installed at the moment?

Can’t seem to see the option which tells me which versions I currently have either, I’m not being daft on purpose I promise :/

Hmm.... from the procedure that Pbondar posted can you post here the pic's on your screen of you attempting to display the s\w versions. People here are willing to help but we do not have a lot of info to go on. Just out of interest where are you located?

So, I have the 30i 2009.
I asked this exact same question and had some helpful advice on my thread.

I can transfer music from the GLOVEBOX USB but cannot update anything.

My menus DO NOT show ANY update options or submenus anywhere referencing an option to update.

Putting my VIN into the BMW website provides me with an update file.

Currently, my armrest USB is damaged and am yet to replace it to try that one, but it will not detect the update file in the glove box at all.
I'm currently having problems getting any phone to scan and find my cars Bluetooth. Hoping an update will address this.

Yep, all evidence seems to point to:
1. glovebox USB is for Music files (transfer to hard drive)
2. console USB is for software updates and music (e.g. 'ipod' or external music source).
3. Software update will not work in glovebox.
4. If you don't have console USB (ie, option wasn't specc'd at purchase), you can't update software (without taking to dealer).

If anyone has experienced otherwise, would love to know.

I have a console USB but it's damaged. I just need to get a replacement but finding a few conflicting items on eBay etc. I'm yet to commit to buying one and replacing it haha!

This is from another post regarding a broken USB port

And the first fix completed too. The USB port in the arm rest wasn't working (the aux port was working fine). On closer examination the little plastic 'guide' bit inside the socket had been snapped off at some point and the 4 metal pins were all bent beyond repair.

I bought part number 9129651 off Ebay - which is different to the part number on the one I removed, 9138402. They are very similar however, just some different coloured plastic and the 'Aux In' text is reversed. Now able to stream music from a USB drive, so all working fine.

Original part: (now looking a bit shabby - rather than take everything apart I just pulled it out with long nose pliers seeing as it was broken anyway)

Also aren’t map updates done through the glovebox port?

Correct

Hi all, sorry for being mia over Christmas, I’m having the same issues as drewsutton regarding there being no software update option in my menu, as per the photo attached. Photo from drewsutton but is exactly what I see on my menu. Tried with both glovebox and armrest usb but no Software update option appears. It’s definitely reading the usb in the armrest because I’ve renamed the usb to BMW when reformatting it and it shows on the media section when I select usb.

I've read several conflicting posts and replies. I'm beginning to think that we may have to use a BMW dealership or at the very least their hardware to update our systems.
I'm actually about to update the maps in the car as they're still on a 2009-02 version. Will post the results once they've completed.
My main reasoning for updating the iDrive is that my Bluetooth doesn't work and that's the first step for me to try and rectify.

What about my hint in my initial post on page 1?

What about this symbol on your screen?

I can update the maps no problem and also transfer music to the internal HDD using the glovebox USB...

It's the iDrive firmware itself that I cannot seem to modify. There is no "Software Update" (or the likes) in the menus. As you can see from my photo he has referenced most people have that at the bottom of their settings screen but my last entry is 'door locks'.

Also, that 'tick' in the bottom corner changes if you press the iDrive scrollwheel in... same way it removes the ETA and additional info in the grey box you can see in the corner.

I have the tick as well, but from what I’ve read and been told that’s for updating the maps and not the I drive software which is what drewsutton and myself are trying to do. The software update option is missing

Hi Guys, I have a 2009 35i. I have the same issue as drewsutton and lucazkoh. My car has both the glove box and arm rest USB ports but there is no software update option in the menu that I can find. I would be really interested to know if anyone manages to get this updated without taking it to the dealer.

As a side note I would be interested to know whether anyone else with a 2009 Z4 is able to play music over the Bluetooth after installing the update. I see the update mentions Bluetooth device control so I have hope. The reason I ask is if it actually allowed me to play audio from my phone I would consider even getting the dealer to install the update.

Currently, I can't actually get my phone to detect the car using Bluetooth at all.
My first step would have been updating to the latest firmware but I seem unable to do this.
Don't really know where to continue looking now.
