I've never scanned a potential purchase for codes, but then none has had an obvious issue either. The water pump in my first E86 died instantly bang on 60K miles, but I believe sometimes it can die intermittently.
As you probably know by now a good 30i is quite hard to find, so if everything else about the car is what you want and you can agree a price you are happy with I'd take a chance on the pump. After all it must be 15 years old so some components are likely to be nearing end of life.
