z4 e85 roof lock motor mechanism

The gear in my lock motor gave out. I'm replacing the motor. I'm curious as to how the motor knows it is fully locked or released? There must be sensors of some sort? Also there are two cables that come out of the motor that have spline fittings. Can they be misaligned, one rotated further than the other so that the locking mechanisms don't close at the same time? I'm trying to understand if the gear really just gave out or is it a secondary symptom of an alignment or sensing problem.

Hi Chazluke...when I got my z4 the hook on the driver side isn’t aligned with the hook on the passenger side. If I close the roof, the driver side hook would still be in a slightly folded position so I had to help it into to slot. What I did was open the motor cover and removed the driver side cable from the motor and turned it until the hooks were aligned. Just be carefull with the motor cover, BMW plastics become so brittle with age.

Yes, There is a sensor on one worm drive (LHS if sitting in the car) that knows when it's fully extended and shuts off the central motor.

Hi, did you already purchase the new motor?

If not I know someone who has one. Cheers
