Z4 door - speakers and sound deadening

Thanks 20 ducks

I have speakers that I know fit the space and have a UK equivelent of Dynamat for the inside of the doors

Thanks for the pointers

I have been buying my parts from this site: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214760

My MFSW kit came in today from them, and lots of little tid bits that I need for some of my projects.

Just add the BMW part number and click search..... Way cheaper than my local stealer...

Such sites are great - anyone know one int he UK?

As an update I'm going to skip the door LED's for now as they are special order from Germany with min 1 week delivery time. Price is OK at £9.28 plus VAT each but it will halt me putting the doors together.

cj10jeeper,

Once you had your door leather replaced, how does the new leather panel attach to the rest of the door card.

I am considering replacing the beige leather piece in mine with black. If I bought used black door cards and removed the leather piece from them, could i then mount them to my existing door cards.

Thanks for the info on the mfsw and paddles, got it all sorted out and it works great.

Glad you got the MFSW and paddles sorted - a satisfying mod to do.

The door cards are a bit of a problem. The leather panel is plastic welded into the remainder of the door panel and needs to be chiselled off. I'd say there was 6 to 8 feet of weld lines to cut that work around all sorts on internal points like speakers door pulls, etc. Takes ages. Once done the panel could be swapped over and the new one bonded in with any decent mastic.

If I were doing it again I would seek out whole panels in the colour combo I needed and swap them over in 10 minutes each side.

Hi All,

I have the basic audio system, so as you know there are no speakers in the doors.

IIRC I should already have the wires there, so is it a matter of just putting some speakers in?

If so, which type of speakers do I require and can anyone recommend any? I would want it to be a perfect fit, so no alteration to the door cards is needed.

My knowledge of audio, speakers, etc is VERY limited.

P.S. will adding these 2 speakers make much of a difference?

Thanks!

Peddy - the door cards accept only BMW proprietory 3 bolt mouting door speakers, but just a tiny bit of modding and you can fit any decent speaker in there. No doubt you could also get adaptors to suit.

There is no wiring in the door for the speakers, so you'd have to route a new cable or as a quick fix splice into the wing mirror tweeters.

I know nothing about audio, but did what I was told by the local shop, who sold me some mid priced speakers and showed that tapping the tweeters was OK.

BTW - my system is a hell of a lot better since adding them, but as the ICE guys would no doubt tell me a transistor radio is better than a valve one

Adding the mids wont make a massive difference to the 6 speaker system as theres no crossover to filter out the mids. Other option is to upgrade the fronts with a better 2 way or 3 way component set.

sorry, but that doesn't mean anything to me. lol as i said my audio knowledge is more or less zero. can you please link me to a "2 way or 3 way component set" product/example?

Read un1leash's signature (line 2) then wonder why we don't understand

A 2 way component set would be a direct swap for the front speakers as it uses a tweeter in the wing mirror cover and 6.5" speaker in the kick panel....

A 3 way component set will be the same as above but add the extra 4" mid speaker in the door card....

You would need to run seperate wiring for the new spkrs. if u splice into the tweeters,u will only get the top end/high pitched vocals and no mid bass sound(that u should get from mids,ie the spkrs that are meant for these spaces),as the tweeters will be filtered to exlude any medium level bass(ie mid bass),so the new spkrs wouldnt sound right. hope this is helpfull
ps 3way components are 1.tweeters,2.mid range/mid bass;3.bass spkrs and any good car audiuo website will list them(hope this isnt stating the obvs)

Actually I run mine on the feed from the tweeters and although I proclaim to know nothing about audio the shop that showed me how to do it, advised there was no filter to the tweeters being a basic system and so it would work just fine. Indeed it does work just fine.

Of course a proper system would no doubt be a much better way to go and they woudl have been happy to upgrade me shoudl I have wished.

Hi, I have basic 6-speakers sound system too. Everything is stock. Please tell me:
1. If I get OEM BMW mid-range door speakers and connect them, will they work?

2. When I remove door cards i saw blue 2-pin connector in a foam. Is that mid-range speaker connector?
