Z4 coupe's engine noise problems???

Hi All

I've been looking to buy a Z4 Coupe for a while now and I've viewed and test driven a few.

With a number of the z4s I've viewed I've noticed a tapping sound from the engine as the engine is turning over. After a while or after driving the noise lessens or goes.

Its been enough of a concern that I've walked away from otherwise good cars.

Speaking to a few owners I've heard it could be something to do with oil not reaching a certain part of the engine and that it can be common in Z4s that haven't been driven in a while.

I just wondered what everyone here thought, am I passing up good cars for a minor problem or is this something I should look out for?

Thanks for your help

From what I understand it's caused by the hydraulic valve lifters draining oil if left unused for a while & doesn't cause any damage.

I have a similar noise just occurring I have just bought the car and when starting today there's a light tapping noise in the engine the person before me hadn't used the car much for the 2 months he had it.

Is it anything I should be worried about ?

Cheers

I would have a oil+filter change done then do a few decent motorway runs & see how things go before worrying too much

This has been covered a good few times. Do a search for "N52/ 3.0 Si ticking" .
Seems to cause some justifiable worry and not a little paranoia. It would appear to be a 'feature' of the N52 sometimes especially in those that are weekend cars. BMW claim that it causes no damage and so far I don't think that anyone has reported any. Mine doesn't do it but a friend of mine's does on occasion but it goes away when the engine is warmed up. Some people however report that their beloved Z sounds like a tractor when started.
