Z4 Coupe vs Porsche 911 Carrera S

Got the chance today to drive a Carrera S for about 50 or so odd miles. Now I know the topic of post is no real contest...however, I really didn't feel that I was driving a car that was massively superior to my Z4 Coupe. Now I know there are a load of stats out there and no doubt people that will laugh at this but in the "real world" of driving I didn't feel I was in a much faster or better handling car (it was a cabrio mind). In fact the biggest difference I noticed was that the breaks in the Z4 feel an awful lot better! The guy who owns the car also has an M5 and after having driven my Z4 a while back he said he felt it was the closest car he had ever driven that gave him a similar "feeling" to his porsche and he commented that the Z4 sounds better when you are in the car than the porsche (courtesy of the sound generator!). However, all in all it was a cracking car and a great drive but I got back into my Z4 and it put a big smile on my face and particularly when I remembered I paid about a 1/3 of the cost of said porsche.

Imagine owning the M version!

I'm racing with my colleague here in Tampa who just got a 1999 911 Carrera (not the S) cabrio and the acceleration on the 911 is simply phenomenal. Even in Sport mode, I barely keep up with him. :o Of course, I am probably an awful race driver. I feel the brakes are about the same. So I am a bit surprised that the S was not that much better than the Z4. I would not however trade his car for mine, I think the Z4MC looks better than the 996 911. :)

I would think that Z4M would have better acceleration than std 911 non s. Does he have any mods??

A given if it's a 99 because it's been rebuilt at least once.

I completely understand what you're saying Anderson. I was originally in the market for a Cayman but couldn't swing the payments so I thought I'd go for a Boxster. I drove 6 or 7 of them, every time getting out saying "Yeah, it's nice I guess, but it's not something I have to own." Just didn't get the hype and was thinking maybe I'm not a sports car fan after all. Then on a Saturday morning I took a drive "just to look" at this Z4C as I've taken the vert out and didn't care for it. 15 minutes later I was working out the trade-in details on my old C230k. Not saying that the Boxster is the same car as a 911S, but everything about the Z4C said "You must buy me now!!!" None of the Porsche's even had me considering making a deal. Not sure if I'd be saying the same thing if I could swing the Cayman, but I just love the Z4C.

To my knowledge he has no mods apart from an exhaust system. I'll ask him this week.

Depends on who's world I guess. Sounds like driving in the UK is best done on a scooter.
You are bang on there! I use one to commute to work and back as I travel through the city! Saves me 20 min than going by car each way!! :P

As I post on other thread... just driving a 911 for 30 min or so .. won't tell how amazing they are .. try one for a weekend or a week!

I would love to upgrade my M Coupe to a 997 S

If M Coupe vs base 997 .. then I wouldn't mind tmy M Coupe .. (new 2009 997 is a different story! much better then 2008!)

Again.. they all nice car, personal preference!! It is weird that nowaday 911 is much more civilize..(even the new E92 M3) and MZ is much more hard core!

996 is already damn nice to drive, esp 996 GT3 .. however, I don't like 996 interior ... same as I dont like the base Z4 interior, but the MZ interior is much nicer!! ..

:P I still think MZ is best for the buck!! (in N/A market)
