Z4 coupe tailgate - repair?

Hi

(first post though I've had my Z4M for a year now.)

Some little git has done a hit and run on my Z4MC, mashing the tailgate nicely just above the 3rd brake light.
Sent some pics to some bodyshop places, they don't like the look of it, given the brake light electrics and moving parts.
I've considered getting a tailgate off ebay but that means painting and to get it painted and fitted I'm loking at probably £700 on top of the £300 the tailgate will cost, and there's no guarantee of fit...
I don't really want to go via my insurance as I have £750 of excess but it's looking like I may have to.
Any thoughts on options/ bodyshop recommendations? (in North London)

Hi

Newbie on here.

I know a good bodyshop DKS London, NW2, ask for Ken

Have use them for various motor insurer repairs for the past 4/5 years

Reasonable and very good standard of repairs

Ouch. And thats a real shame its your first photo. I hope you get it fixed easily. Do let us know if that will repair or not. I suppose it goes on the competency of the repairer as someone like Ed China aka Wheeler Dealers would be able to fix that? :?

That's a shame. I know a guy who's based in romford. Used him on my old 3.0 and he reprayed my bonnet on my current //M as it was riddled with stone chips

Romford may be a bit far, depends on if I get another tailgate and get it painted. I was quoted 700 for painting a tailgate as it needs primed first. Sounds a lot but they said it's because it's risky in terms of painting - condition and fit unknown..
Still trying breakers yards for tailgates at the moment.

Thanks from me too. Just round the corner!

There is a silver one on eBay for £300. Can't see how it would cost another £700 to get it painted and fitted. A used one will be no different to fit than a new one. That's the way I would go without going down the insurance route. Repairing will end up will filler etc which I would try to avoid if it's repairable.

If I were you though I'd be ringing round BMW specialist breakers for a tailgate in you colour. If it's black sapphire then colour will match so will only need fitting.

no point trying to fix that. we pay insurance for things like this, new tailgate, paint to colour, swap glass and trim and fit to vehicle.will be a fair bill i should think tho.

In case anyone was interested, I took my car to DKS, decided to get the tailgate repaired rather than spray a used one.

Very good job, less than the cost of the insurance excess would have been

That's a good repair glad you got it sorted... If you don't mind telling what did the repair set you back?

it was 450. My insurance excess is 750

still slightly wondering if I should have got the tailgate from ebay for 300 and had it painted...

but it's a good job

I'm not sure what it should cost, but that's not bad vs insurance route.

Looks fine!

How did they accomplish that?

I remember that the main issue with my Zed dents was the thick sheet metal - not so easy to pull with their vacuum devices. And that Bangle butt looks quite complicated to fix... Let's hope they didn't have to use too much filler.
