Z4 coupe purchase imminent - advice needed please

Hi,

I'm very keen to buy a Z4 Coupe and I've test driven a couple recently. However, I have a slight dilemma - I love the seats in the Sport but the ride is too harsh. In the SE, the ride is comfortable, but the seats don't have any side support at all (it felt as though i'd nearly fallen out of them when I went round a roundabout!).

Through looking at posts and eBay, I've worked out that the best route is probably going to be a Sport with revised suspension - it seems to be easier/cheaper to get hold of aftermarket suspension than the M-Sport seats (which I'd need to do if I bought an SE).

Does anyone have any experience of the SE suspension compared to aftermarket suspension (such as KW V3's)? Is the ride similar to the SE suspension or a lot harder? I'm a little worried about shelling out loads on a new car and revised suspension to only find that it's not comfortable.

Any opinions or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome,go for the sport then ditch the runflat tyres it improves the ride  but don't forget the zed is a sports car so you have expect a firm ride

Seconded - ride quality is much better without the OEM runflat tyres - change for falkens for £400-£500 seems to be a popular choice (although could spend a little more as some complain about turn in feel when pressing on)

hello and welcome

the zed is a sports car so expect stiffer suspention, you will soon get used to it

Thanks for the responses.

Both of the cars had standard tyres - so it was a like for like comparison. Perhaps the road was worse where the Sport was, or perhaps I was concentrating on it more. However, I definitely found that the SE was noticeably less crashy over bumps.

If anyone has upgraded an SE to aftermarket suspension, i'd be very interested to hear about it.

Thanks.

You get used to the ride, I was driving a Disco3 for five years with air suspension. So did feel a little harsh :-) but a month later never really notice it.

I'm in the same boat as you though I found the Sport handled better than I'd been led to believe on a recent test drive (I've not tried the SE so it's interesting that you say it was not as crashy - I think I need to try one). I've seen a few SEs for sale with the Sport seats so that may be a good option for you. Unfortunately many folk seems to think a road car doesn't handle well unless the springs and suspension are dialled so hard your fillings fall out, your passenger is throwing up and your car pogos and tramlines all over the road :D

Hi and welcome to the Forum. Have a look at the link in my signature and there is a checklist which might assist when buying pre owned. Don't be overcome by the moment and regret a hasty purchase after the event. Take your time and you will get what you are after. Good luck.

HI,

That's good to hear that there are a few SE's out there with sport seats. I've been looking for a few weeks and hadn't seen any, but perhaps I just need to hold out a bit longer.

AlanJ - Thanks for the link about the pre-checks - I'll definitely be using those. Cheers.
