Z4 Coupe NOS installation, your thoughts.

Hi, just thinking about theoretical performance upgrades for the e86 3.0 coupe (with a budget I have yet to realise). Am firstly thinking of slightly lowering the car with a Bilstien/Eibach combination as 108 wheels seem to be a little lost within the wheel arches.

My mind then wandered onto the engine (the sound is intoxicating). I understand that getting any more power from the particular N52 fitted to my coupe is a struggle without forced induction (which would ruin the sound), and even then gains are quite small (I am led to believe BMW achieved 306bhp with twin turbos?).

What are your thoughts on NOS (in particular a 'wizards of NOS' installation). I love the engine on my coupe, but have been looking at their 50hp 'shot'. It only kicks in at full throttle and can be switched off when not required. It seems like a good compromise as it is not asking to much and can be disabled for 'everyday' use.

I am not a 'fast and furious' type, but this idea has burrowed its way into my brain. Is it too good to be true (cost excluded)?

I wouldn’t bother for 2 reasons:

1. It’s expensive
2. The engine block is made from Magnesium and so I would be sceptical of it’s longevity after NOS installation.

If you want more horsepower, buy a faster car.

(E9X 335i + map is probably your best bet).
 
I don't really think the magnesium would cause too much of an issue, NOS is just an oxidiser at the end of the day. Have you checked though that they have a kit suitable for Valvetronic? I think most of their kits rely on a throttle flap which of course you don't have on the N52.

The only other thing is that insurance companies have been slow to accept any kind of Nitrous install. I think possibly only Adrain Flux and maybe Greenlight will accept it, but even then the surcharge is pretty steep. They are legal though as far as I'm aware and their horsepower claims well proven.

I would however consider what it might do to the resale value of your car.

To be honest, in the cold light of day, I am not sure the coupe really needs it.
 
Out of interest, why do you think a super charger would ruin the sound? I’ve been in a supercharged coupe and it sounded pretty great to me! :thumbsup:

Interesting thinking, but if I really wanted more power for my Z4C I'd just save up for a Z4MC. :)
