Z4 coupe - M Sport seats versus SE seats?

Hello, I’ve read that the M Sport seats are a better bet than the bog stock SE seats. Please can someone tell me why is that? Also, do the SE seats allow more or less headroom, i.e. do you sit lower in an SE or M Sport seat?

Apologies if this topic has been covered before!

Thanks! :D

M sport seats have proper bolsters and are a lot more supportive, whereas the standard seats on these cars are very flat. I’m sure some people will prefer the standard seats, but personally it’s no contest.

Pretty sure they’re a similar height, I believe both can be had in electric and manual, as far as I remember the manual ones sit lower on account of not having to accommodate a motor, but don’t quote me on that

I've now owned both seats and can definitely vouch for the additional comfort of the sports seats - added bolster support, better back comfort and additional leg support. Though the back comfort could be due to the new foam that was replaced in my seats.

I've not noticed any difference in head room.

Do you mean the additional comfort of the M-Sport seats? The standard seats are called sports seats by bmw!

I have had both type, while the m sport version does look better and give a bit more support ,they are not worth paying daft money for.The most I would pay would be around £700.

M sport seats are a VAST improvement over the SE ones. Before I fitted mine, I used to corner with one knee braced either against the door or the transmission tunnel to stop me sliding about. Now my ass doesn't move when pressing on. The additional thigh support from the extendible section is great too, and that bit is also heated.

Yep! M-Sport as opposed to SE "Sport" Seats

As Dlv has said one uses supportive bolstering to prevent you sliding around and the other uses the door and transmission tunnel. I so want some msport seats :( :(

Changed to MSport seats a couple of months ago. It was a bit of a hassle because my original seats weren’t electric or heated. But definitely worth it. The MSport seats are much more comfortable and supportive. If you can find some at a reasonable price it is definitely worthwhile.

I have se seats in my coupe, and I find them absolutely fine-Christ, any one would think they were wooden slabs! in fact my main bugbear is that I prefer fabric seats so any leather seats are not ideal for me.

I think the se seats support fine- I certainly never noticed a any issues when pressing on. The extra bolsters on the m sport seats would get on my nerves.

I don't get why people would pay daft money for m sport seats but each to their own I suppose.

Another M tax!!

I am "SE" sitted on mine and wish I had the additional lateral support from the M seats. I have never tried the latter, but I think they can just do better. I would not rule out a fine Z4 because of standard seats, but rather consider it as a nice "plus".

I went to great lengths to swap out standard Sport seats for M sport seats
Basically you sit on Sports seats and in M Sport seats - no comparison imo :driving:

E46 Seats also fit. Although you lose a bit in height.

Logically seats are not ideally one size fits all, SE always seem fine to me (6'2" tall & med build), basically a skinny fecker in shiny pants might slip around a bit more on SE's, a taller 'roomier' guy will feel pinched in sports. (I specified sports in my Mini and regret it every journey).

I know it's an individual thing, but I just wouldn't want the standard seats in what is after all a sports car!

M-Sport seats all the way.

Hmm i tend to just spill into then over the sides of any seat i sit in, could be the size of my arse, however it is more likely that the seats are to small

Wow! Thanks very much for all the comments and photos, I really appreciate it. A small confession - I've sat in a coupe with M Sport seats, which was comfy, but I might have to compromise to get a car with low mileage, good condition and history. That car might be hundreds of miles away so it's really useful to hear about the differences. Ta very much! :D
