Z4 coupe - creaky rear boot cover

Calling all coupe owners - anyone else find the retractable boot cover is noisy (creaks and knocks over every bump in the road) ? If so, how did you remedy it, or did you just live with it?

Can you tell where the creak is coming from?

I had a “creak” from the roller cover that was sorted by wrapping the plastic ends that clip into the rear of the boot with felt tape.

The clips in the side trim panels between the cabin and the rear hatch can be noisy too, also sorted with felt tape (or new clips).

I’ve still got a springy “tinging” noise over bumps that I can’t pinpoint the source of, despite removing all of the boot trim and the M’s battery box. :x Might be the belt reels.

Since I had to take all the trim apart to reach the top mounts when changing my rear suspension, I stuffed packaging foam under the trim as I assembled it. This has stopped all creaks and noises from the trim (including boot lid).

Before I had done this, having the retractable boot cover attached to the lid made the boot lid trim very rattly, so I used thick double sided tape (without removing one of the sides) to make the attachment very tight and stop plastic with plastic contact, which seemed to do the trick. But if I were you, I'd do it properly, so listen to MrPT's advice.

Had a very annoying metallic rattle coming from the rear/boot, spent days trying to find it, specially because I DIY'd my suspension refresh and I was afraid I had screwed up. After failing to find what it was, I got in the boot and asked my friend to drive my car around over bumps, 2 minutes of suffering later I could pin point where the noise was, it was coming from under the car exactly where the backbox is, which I happened to have changed at the same time as my suspension. One of the clamps used had a bolt that was a bit too long and was hitting the diagonal bracing under the diff when the exhaust moved over bumps, cut the bolt, and no noises since. Very happy that it wasn't my screw up 8)

From the driver's seat I was convinced it was a top mount or boot lid...

Interesting that you have clamps in that position at all. Do you have a resonator delete?

Modded backbox. Cuts were done when that bracing was out of the car.

Thanks guys, I think I'll start with the felt tape and see how I get on. That could well sort it!

It'a difficult to pinpoint the location. It sounds like it's everywhere!
