Z4 coupe condition

Hi all Z addicts

I'm a new member here, just registered myself to find some advice.
I'm ferociously looking for a z4 coupe, min 80k, silver, red or grey, up to 10k£.
The question is what is acceptable condition for 2007-2009 z4.
Recently I test drove this car: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202005269561182?fromSavedAds=true&advertising-location=at_cars

It had side windows badly scratched, rear bumper poorly repainted, aluminium interior trim scratched, headlights scratched and some oil leakage on the front of engine not far from oil filter.
Would anyone go for such condition and is this to be expected?
Also that body kit lol
Is there anyone who could tell me how z4 autobox supposed to behave, that one I tried had a delay when pushing it, hard to explain, but it felt like a turbo engine almost.
Any advice is appreciated.
Many thanks xx

z4 coupe auto? didnt know they made any autos!

anyways, sounds like a bad buy if there are that many things wrong with it, i'd keep looking!

Yeah there are a few autos around me and not many manuals, but I don't mind auto. I keep thinking now that it wasn't a bad idea to skip this one.

Welcome, excellent choice of car :D

I know the throttle response changes quite a lot with sport button 'on' in mine, which is a manual. I'm sure I've read on here that it's even more noticeable in an auto. Did you try driving with the sport button on? In the mid rev range with a good stab on the accelerator, the N52 engine really responds so you shouldn't notice anything like turbo lag.

There's plenty out there for your budget, so test a few before you buy. At £10k you should expect something reasonably mint

Ever since I started looking at these cars I'm in love
I tried sport button, it definitely did something lol, I just didn't have enough time to play with it.
Hopefully I'll find my so soon :D

Condition is a fare indicator of recent love and attention, put pushes up ticket price and can occasionally be used to distract attention from deeper issues. Maintenance history is a fare indicator of through life love and attention.

If you can buy one with both. If you can't the later is just as important as the former and tends to reflect less on sticker price..

Hi and welcome to the forum.

An E86 is an excellent choice but I'd give that one a miss, especially at that price!

I hope you find one soon, then you can enjoy :driving:

It definitely didn't get love it deserves.
It was serviced though, about every 15k miles if I remember correctly. Is that usual on these cars?

Thanks guys, I'm glad I came here

15k intervals would be Bmw recommended so you can't really gripe at that but in a ideal world you want to be doing a yearly / 8k oil change regime , the sequence Ins1 - oil -ins2 with Si Z4s means very little in terms of actual tasks carried out so you really need to sift through a cars history + paperwork to see just what has or hasn't been covered in the last 2-4 yrs or 30k-40k miles

BMW use Condition Based Servicing, so it's usually about 15K miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. The dash shows the distance/time to the next service when you start it up.

So depending on how it was used every 15K miles may be OK - you really need to look at the dates as well.

I had my last one serviced every 2 years, but that was only about 8K miles.

I agree on doing it every 8k, small price to pay for a healthy engine.
Talking about service, I always liked doing it myself, would it put you off if it was done by the owner with proof of parts and dates?

Doing it yourself might work if you were to be selling privately but I believe plenty of dealers don't pass on documents these days for fear of falling foul of GDPR regulations, so in those circumstances a stamp in the book is going to be a lasting record!

Hi
I too looked for ages until I stumbled on a good one. It had a few things that needed changing (springs of course!) but cosmetically and mechanically it was perfect with low mileage. If the engine is good (absolutely no oil leaks) and the car is not damaged, most other items can be sorted at relatively low cost.
Mine is a manual but I did test drive an auto, it was tight with no delays or hesitations at all. A million miles better than my 5 series auto that feels sloppy and sleepy.
On top of the mechanical and bodywork, make sure it feels nice at 70mph - the steering vagueness is a bitch to fix.
Enjoy, I can't wait to take mine out from its enforced 'shielding'.

PS. Get shot of the run-flats if it has them!

Wigsters, what made you choose manual over the auto?
I would love to drive a manual, but there's nothing close to me at the moment.
Also it's difficult sometimes if there's no motorway close by when test driving.

Hi Andres, it's a personal choice really. I am lucky enough that the Z4 is a 'toy' and so we still have the family car that is automatic for convenience on long journeys on our stop-start motorways.
Having had quick auto's before I have never been happy with them when driven in a spirited manner, I like a car to change gear when I want and how I want -- not when a computer tells it to do so :) For me, it is a more involved experience than an auto or a flappy padel type affair, even if the latter is now probably quicker!
I did like the auto Z4 when I tested it, I had just decided that the manual box was something I wasn't willing to compromise on.

Hi, thanks for explaining.
I'm gonna use it as daily and I never had auto before so it would be a welcome change.

I'm going to have a look at another car this week, probably the first one to book a viewing. I'm interested what y'all thinking about the price for this one: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202005299628318?fromSavedAds=true&advertising-location=at_cars

As a daily I can see the appeal of an Auto although my daily is a manual, but then I don't commute any more!

First off that is a late one on a 58 plate, and the spec looks pretty good with parking sensors, Bi-Xenons, heated seats, cruise and the MFSW. Plus it's got those 19" CSL replica wheels which is a bonus, assuming you like them!

And as time goes by finding examples with that sort of mileage is only going to get harder.

Personally I wouldn't want to pay that much for it, but if anything asking prices seem to be going up! FWIW I paid nearly £1,000 less for my Montego Blue Coupe on 77K miles in May 2016, and couldn't even get £7K for it in January on 91K miles. :(

But I suppose it just depends on how badly you want it! Good luck with the viewing anyway.

Thanks, I guess they still loose their value, even though it's a relatively rare car it's not some old barn find.

But if you had bought a car with many more miles and then added some on top yourself, it would have lost even more value.

The truth is that most cars will always empty our wallets, but at least we get to empty their tanks :D

Hate when dealers do this. They say it’s done 70,000 miles but it’s actually done over 71,000.
Not a ,associated difference but even so.

As said, it’s a late example and fairly well specced. I’m not a fan of the blacked out rear lights though.
Certainly a deal to be had if it’s as good as it seems when you test drive it.
