Z4 convert motor replacement

Hi all,
Having the hydro motor replaced by an independant. When the dealer diagnosed and quoted they made no mention of replacing sound insulation housing and the parts quote only referred to the hydro motor. I see on the forum many refer to replacing the housing. Is this needed or can the existing one be reused? Also any thoughts to warding off water intrusion in the future. Some suggest sealing the motor in its housing. Any thoughts on that.
The roof is coming out anyway so if I need a new housing better to know now and/or if any mods can be done to prevent water issues better to do it while the roof is out.
Thanks in advance.

you don't need new housing, unless it's broken I believe.
However, the insulation within it will be full of water, corrosion and other detritus.
It is well worth and recommended to replace this at the same time as the motor.

As for protection from water ingress again, there are a few posts on here with mods etc that can be carried out.
The main one is to just seal the unit entirely.

Take a read of this thread: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=10190

It depends on the housing - mine was soaking, so I replaced the housing + insulation (they come as a single unit) too, seemed a false economy not to really - would say even more so if you are paying someone else to do it!

By design the box should be sealed - so any extra effort to seal it better should do no harm. Again though, this makes it more critical to use a new one - don't want to seal it if it's wet!

I drilled a hole in the bottom of my new housing; as it seemed like it would probably get a bit wet regardless over time due to the cables flexing during operation and weakening the seal - this way at least it won't fill up - the water has somewhere to go. Jury is very much still out on this - some indies have done it for people, some have rubbished the idea. We concluded we'd know in a few years time when people's replacements start to fail.

what sort of cost (UK) are we looking at for motor and housing?

Ta

part numbers (based on a 3.0i pre-facelift) are: 54347193448 for the motor and 54347119635 for the housing / insulation.

prices from a stealer are about: £340 and £73 respectively

Cheaper from Sopers Lincoln after deducting Forum Discount of 10% and 20% respectively and this includes postage and packing.
