z4 cluster

hi guys

i just brought a z4 the other month and the ECU light had been tampered with to pass an mot and the speedo was broken, the issue that was cuasing this light was a broken disa valve and faulty o2 sensors iv fixed these now. so i sent of the cluster to cluster repairs uk and unfortunately the cluster could not be repaired, the eeproms were shorted or something along the lines of that.

any way my question is the new unit is £715. how hard is it to reprogram a used set with pa 1.4 ? and will it work ? i feel mugged off by this as iv spent 800 pounds fixing the mechanical issues and now the battery decided to die on me (faulty cell)

any help would be great.

Hi and welcome to the Forum - sorry your first post is to report some problems :(
Can't help you on the programming issue (PA 1.4 probably won't do this as it's a security issue in terms of setting total mileage covered and will be a BMW only function).

There's a s/h cluster on E bay for £49.99

hi Alan

that's for the si model i believe their is an extra display in the middle, according to a parts dealer the used one has to have he same millage, and the problem will be coding this unit to the car i believe its a one time shot to code the cluster?

The mileage is held in more than one place, it might not even be in the cluster. It is in the LCM module though. If it is in the cluster and I guess it will be it would have to be programmed to match the LCM. It is possible to get rid of the tamper dot also, but you will need to find someone who will do it.

Agree - seem to remember a post on here some time ago and the mileage being stored in the LCM as you state Srhutch. Yes you can get rid of the tamper DOT and several firms on an INet search quote firms ho can do this but somewhat suspect in terms of what they are doing....!

grr why cant life be simples... so its the 715 bmw job or the tamper dot... i will got with the tamper dot... i have my cluster still at these guys. they said they will try extract the eeprom data and i have to find a donnar.

Im sure there was someone on here that had a second hand cluster re coded to their car after a car sales had put black silicon over the warning lights and damaged the original cluster, i cant remember who it was though im sorry, but im sure you dont need to buy a new unit :driving:

There was somebody recently, but think that was for airbag that they covered the light.

no tamper dot :D so when you pull the needles twist left and pull and they will come away the pain is putting them back in, leave them out of the case, plug them in so you can correct the position
