Z4. Bought it back after 10 years

Hi. This is my first post.

In 2003 I took delivery of a brand new Z4 from the dealer in Doncaster. Spec: 2.5, silver, manual, black leather, 108's, loud speaker upgrade and xenons... My daily driver was a company new Vectra Sri. In one year did 11k in the Z4 and 55k in the Vectra. The 11k in the Z4 included a flat out blast to Monte Carlo via Switzerland with my brother...... I had it for a year and then sold it and bought a conservatory, or something equally as boring.

Anyway enough of the reminiscing.. Married and two kids later I was trawling autotrader on the iPad (as you do and certainly not looking to buy a car) over Xmas and came across my old Z4 at a garage in Preston. Within 36 hours it was parked on my drive!

My daily driver nowadays is a 2012 520d msport with the right spec and I've a 535d m sport touring on the way fully specced. The Z4 has been between Prestige bodyshop and Autologic in Hessle (near Hull) as my plans are to bring the 66k used but not abused Z4 back to - as brand new.. No upgrades, just as it was on the 28/09/03....

The car cost me 5k this time round and circa 33k the first time. Autologic have been great and Lee understands where I coming from, there is nothing wrong with the car but I want it as new. The quote at the moment for mechanicals, bodywork and wheel refurbishment is pushing 5k.. Some people may think I've gone mad (my Mrs does) but this isn't about how much the car is worth, it's about something more special.. I'm proper pleased. The car is kept at work and inside at the moment. Once back to as I want it will be used on nice, dry days only and kept under cover at all other times. I will never sell this car. I'm quite into Detaling so the cleaning and polishing side of things is something I can do /enjoy myself.

I'll try to keep you posted. Great forum BTW. Thanks - James.

Hi James , welcome!

That's a really good story, amazing you found it again really! In the grand scheme of things, 10k to basically have your original car back as good as new is worth it to you! Can't put much of a price on nostalgia :D

Thanks WLH
The reason for ordering the car in 2003 was due to working for a company in SC (Greenville) and Z4's being built locally there and on the road before the UK. At the time all seemed to be white with cream interiors from memory.

One step at a time srhutch..

Posting a topic took 3 pints of peroni. Car looks --- let's say as you'd expect. I will get some photos up though ASAP.

Thanks. James

Nice post James
You must have been well pleased with the Zed first time around - looking forward to seeing the finished results - what's being done for £5K, sounds like a thorough sort out.

Do you live in Doncaster? I left there for Newcastle upon Tyne jn 1975 - been here ever since.

Keep up your posts and welcome to the Forum,

:driving:

Welcome to the forum and with a great story too

I did a similar thing many years ago with my 240Z, sold it then bought it back a few years later and restored it so I know where you're coming from

Welcome to the forum James, it's a fantastic story and looking forward to seeing some pics

Good Man. That's the second 'I've bought back my old car' thread I've read today. That's it, the e89 is not going because I know I'll regret it. Its a love hate relationship but I love her more than I hate her. Time for a second runabout only. e89 is staying...

.... probably.

Thanks for the kind comments. 2 owners since me. I live nr the Humber Bridge. Photos to follow....

Love the story and looking forward to seeing the pics. Are you going to be making a progress thread with all the work being done outlined? I'd be interested in seeing what you're getting for 5k.
