This is the bike rack I bought, bit expensive at £450 but it works a treat and I can keep the Z4 (Well sell it and by a Z4 ///M)

I bought a Hollywood Baja 3 and after 2 uses one of the strap mounts sheared off. Could have been a manufacturing fault but I didn't want to try it again. Returned that and bought a Saris Sentinel 2 which I think is much better. There's much less movement on the back of the car and it's done motorway speeds of 80 with no trouble. Bear in mind I have a coupe so the top mounting points are different which may have had a role in the strap mount failing.

I lookes at the sentinel 2 but was worried about damage to the car from any rack in the end plus 2 extra seats are helpful with twins so was my best option.

There's no more risk of damage than with any other rack. I've certainly got no problems with mine, just keep the cranks strapped in the right position and all is well. I'd rather have a van or something but this is good enough for now.

Nik, that's what I meant in my post, I was worried about damage from any rack not just the sentinel.

Just thought I'd add my tuppence worth on this - I bought the Saris Bones rack and gave it its first outing on the weekend. It does need an additional accessory to work with the Coupe - the 'hatch huggers' are designed to work with glass shut lines. Once we got it lined up and working properly it was fantastic. We found that lining the top of the lower feet with the bottom of the brake light on the boot gave enough room for the rack to sink down once loaded with the bikes. Once all loaded up & all straps were tightened, it was very stable and didn't move at all.

Hatch hugger attachment fits under the boot hinge line - it's basically just a chunky foam cylinder. Saris recommend a 2 bike maximum load for these.

Good effort. But rather you than me putting those feet resting on the middle of the rear window - I know glass is stronger in the middle (compared to the edges) but I'd still be concerned with the amount of pressure being put onto the glass by those feet. How I'm wrong though.

Slight update to this thread of my own - one MTB in the boot of a Roadster:

It involves unbolting the stem and removing the forks from the head-tube, but it all fits no probs and more importantly I can still lower the roof too. Not as much hassle as I first thought - removing the forks is a 2 min job.

Pleasantly surprised that my old cheapo bike rack (halfords I think, circa 1992!!) fits fine on my Z with a little care.

Used bits of old inner tube to protect the paint work from the 4 hooks that contact with boot-lid. The 2 large hooks are secured underneath the rear bumper but they held OK. I drove very considerately with roof down, bike very clear in rear-view-mirror, and all remained solid and secure. Clearance over the spoiler is about 2.5". Maybe I should invest in a second number plate though? (Cycle anoraks please note the titanium frame matches the Titanium paintwork  )

On another note I also managed to rearrange my bicycle dedicated garage to fit the Z in, hanging bikes from roof beams, with added secondary strapping just in case!!:-

kipperonabike, that's a good effort squeezing all that in! I'm lucky in that my garage is longer and slightly wider than a normal single garage, so the bikes and Z4 share it pretty well. It's always being refined though.

Used my Saris Sentinel 2 for the first time this weekend. Took a bit of adaptation - the top straps I found worked best when looped under the boot lit and attached to each side of the boot instead. The metal strap ends look like they''ll cause damage but they didn't although next time I might coat them on masking tape for peace of mind. Did about 300 miles this weekend carrying the Orange up to and around the dirt tracks of East Anglia and it didn't move much at all - even after some sustained high speed single track C road action

Highly recommended rack if you're after something under £50, compact and able to carry one or two bikes.
