Morning experts; I have a z4 roadster that smells (and was treated) like an ashtray.

Thinking about the roof, the interior liner must be harbouring a lot of the residue smoke particles. Am I insane to be considering stripping it out and soaking it in the bath?

Is it even possible without breaking something??

yes, probably.
I would get a pro detailing company to do it.
They have proper steam cleaners etc, and will do a good job.

There's a device they put in cars to defunk them. Like an ozone machine or something. It gets left in there for 24hrs. Not something you buy yourself but a company will do it.

Seen them used on car related youtube videos.

I've stripped a roof completely to sell it for parts. I wouldn't want to remove the liner without removing the roof from the car. I believe I had to drill out 8 rivets along the front of the liner to remove it.

There's also a plastic strip going from side to side along the stitch line that's visible from inside the car. The plastic strip is delicate and probably to some degree already broken in places and you're likely to break it more by removing the liner. This is where people usually complain about a sagging roof liner when they are fully broken.

Believe this is what you're looking for:

3. Ozone Machine Treatment
Ozone machine treatment is a highly effective method for neutralizing odors at the molecular level. By generating ozone molecules, the machine penetrates the vehicle’s interior and reacts with odor-causing compounds, breaking them down and eliminating unpleasant smells. This treatment is particularly useful for stubborn or persistent odors that may be difficult to remove through traditional cleaning methods.
