Z4 3.0si coupe gear box

Hi all,

I am looking into buying a second hand 58 plate Z4 coupe 3.0si.
The thing is, it has an auto box with the flappy paddles and tiptronics too.
I would prefer manual as this is the usual option for a small sports car.

However, anyone got any views on this?......

Cheers
Angus

Welcome to the forum. I have the manual but I hear they are pretty good.

Just to be nosey, what sort of spec/price/deal are you looking at?

Andy

Hi Andy,
Its a 58 plate 3.0 coupe with a few extras like heated seats, dark glass, 18inch wheels, piano black dashboard, comfort package, and obviously the auto box. Its on for £19,950.
Is that good, bad........

Seems a little steep to me. Is it an approved used with warranty? How many miles?

Reason I was asking is since getting mine in Dec Ive become obsessed with wether or not I got a good deal :headbang: when I should really just be enjoying what is the best car I have ever owned :driving:

Yes, its an approved at the BMW dealers in Plymouth.
It will come with the 1 year standard BMW warranty.
Should I haggle and is the gearbox still fun to drive with ?
Cheers

Just found it on the bmw website. You do know that one is on advertised on the internet at £18,990? Not 19,990?

I think there is still room for negotiation at that price.

As for auto, I dont know but this thread might help.....

IMO the more time you spend in stop start traffic with a big engine the more you appreciate an auto box. The weight and feel of a box/clutch generally deteriorates as the size and output of an engine increases.

I had auto/tip on my SLK 320 and it suited it very well, the Zed has a decent manual but it's far from being bolt-action and I miss the auto in traffic. I wouldn't be put off an auto box if the cars right and it suits your driving.

Dear Ewazix,
Thanks for your comments.
I think I will like the auto myself. Having test driven a 635d recently with the same kind of box, I loved it.
PS what does smg stand for ?

No prob's,

Sequential Manual Gearbox, good luck with the search

If you're not sure on an automatic, don't buy one. You're spending a huge amount of money, and it's worth waiting for one with the right spec.

Make sure you get a decent length test drive, if you are unconvince/unsure then I'd keep looking. No point spending that kind of money on a car that you aren't 100% sure on.
As for price, all depends on spec, mileage and what if any work will need doing in the near future ie tyres, servicing etc. Personnally I wouldn't get too hung up on the age of the car, the coupe didn't change from launch to end (I don't think anyway). You will still get the same warranty on an 06 car as you would on an 08 car, so buy on condition rather than age. All in my opinion of course.

Just to add to your confusion I deliberately bought an Auto, and 265bhp with the sport button pressed reminds you that it's not just an easy car in traffic, but a great sports car too. Certainly can't notice the slight drop in performance in the real world.

Had the cash to buy an ///M but the compromise in heavy traffic commuting made me look out a 3.0si instead.

Try it, you might be converted - but it's each to their own, I won't be offended if you don't like it!

i have an automatic, its great and unless your are a true racing driver, the auto will change faster than you need

i am just pure lazy, i love the automatic

If you are not sure then think about it until you are.

I have had a 3.0Si Auto and now have an MC - obviously manual. Now the M has a nasty box at the best of times but the flappy paddles with that auto box was fantastic.

It really suits the car.

Angus ,no worries with auto box i have manual si coupe & is great ! but also have 335d with paddles & love it .don`t let it put you off ! both are great when you have the power under foot !

Yep, heel and toe everywhere for me... brmmm, brrmmmmmm!

Would be rather boring not having gears to get right as well :D

If the car is to enjoy driving my 2 cents would be to "man up" and get a manual, the gearshift adds to the fun - don't let a robot do it for you! My girlfriend loves driving the M for the shift and the revs (even better with stormwerks shifter) don't let the auto softies sway you...you'll be cheating yourself out of a real sports car experience :p

quick retort from this 'auto softie' - if you really want to 'man-up' then buy a motorbike instead - nothing on this forum could touch a half decent bike. I think my car's quick until I get on my bike, but that's another story entirely :)
