Hi All,

I'm can hear the engine fan going (not as in breaking, but as in sounding like vacuum cleaner) on my Z4 3.0i. I can only really hear it in stop start traffic so between 1000 and 3000rpm. I presume this is the viscous fan? Is it normal?

The fan on my old E30 auto was audible once the car had heated up, but I never heard it on my E36 325i's.

Regards,
Chris.

Leccy fan on 3.0i, so it should only come on when asked.

Is it *actually* operating or not?

If it is then if it's hot it needs to be on in stop start traffic.

Does it operate only when the car gets properly hot?

It is definately operating, but I'm sure it came on within the first 2 minutes of the car being on the other morning, engine/oil was definately cold. I will do some proper testing at the weekend and let you know.

Just to clarify: I should expect it to come on only when the engine is hot and/or in stop start traffic (when the engine is hot?), but not all the time?

Regards,
Chris.

Did a bit of investigating at the weekend, looks like I was just being paranoid: The fan doesn't come on when I start the car in the morning and drive off like I previously thought, but does once the engine is up to temperature in stop start traffic, as expected.

Thanks for the advice.

Chris.

Hehe, is it the cars cabin fan that you can hear?

It is surprising how loud it can get in 'auto', you only realise how loud it is when you turn it off!
