Z4 3.0!!!

Hi guys, im looking at getting a Z4 but im kinda stuck between the 2.5 and 3.0.

If i go for the 3.0 its going to be a more expensive buy and the insurance will burn a huge whole in my pocket. Can you give me some inspiration to do it? Is the 3.0 really poor on fuel? will it cost me an arm and a leg to run?

Is it that much quicker? Spec says 5.9? thats quick!! Does it feel this quick? HOW QUICK IS THE 3.0? haha

Cheers guys, im sure you will ''big up'' the 3!

The 3 litre is 5.9 secs 0-62 (0-60 is 5.7).

Economy is astounding if you drive it that way (I got 49mpg on a steady 70 mile drive and 39mpg on a 260 mile motorway drive) but put your foot to the floor and it will duly drink the contents of your wallet! Overall ours is averaging around 30mpg over the last 18 months -I'd call that special for a 3.0l sports car!

Plenty of posts on here regarding economy, just do a search.

Welcome to the Forum - for me it's always been buy what you can afford to run and maintain. No point if you get a 3.0 and it sits in the garage because you can't afford to run it. 2.5 is an excellent Zed and will give you just as much fun until you are in a position to move up.

I bought the 3.0 recently as my first sports car, and first Z4!

Absolutely love it. I spent time deciding but didn't ever want to sit there thinking I wish I'd gone for something better. If you buy the best how can you be disappointed!
:D

Don't get either! you will spend your waking life on the forum, if not then pulling your car apart for the the latest mod

Today i fitted a clear brake light and picked up some aero skirts - See what i mean?

these cars are amazing and a great hobby so I doubt you will be disappointed in wha you buy. Depends where you are coming from car wise. My advice is drive a few and decide. Welcome along.

Hi, i wanted a 3.0 but could only find auto's at the time when i was looking and i found a low mile one owner 2.5 proper gearbox Z4 instead and it's great!! i did want a black or light blue one but at the time the black ones i looked at had scratches on that showed up somthing rotten. But I'm not getting in this argument again!! Z4 Coupes and Roadsters look good in any colour!!!
Good luck!! :driving:

Like others have said get what you can afford then you can really enjoy the thing, I have a 2.5 and I am more than happy with it. Just do your sums insurance etc do your research in terms of spec then go for it and enjoy :driving: normally a few well spec-ed and loved zeds on here for sale

If you get the manual transmission, I understand that the 2.5 has a 5 speed, whereas the 3.0 has a 6-speed (what I have). The 3.0 is actually rated as having better fuel economy in our USA government tests. I figure it is the 6-speed that makes the difference. So I went with the 3.0. More power, better fuel economy. The best of both worlds.

Yeah, dead right - I agree that the 6 speed box helps a lot

Hi again guys! Been out of the country for a while and i am STILL looking for my dream ZED. I will be purchasing later this year, but i'm confident i'll be going for the 3.0. I'll keep you updated with hopefully some pics of my new baby very soon :D

S3NYR, wow, serious resurrection of your own 12 month old thread

Glad you're still about, 3 words - get it sorted

My mate's 3.0 averages over 30mpg, and my 2.5SI can only average 25mp, (they both can do more on long runs - but the overall trip computer over time seems to level out at 30 and 25 respectively) I really think that the 3.0 might be a more economical engine to run.

I love my 2.5, but wish i had waited for a 3.0, i think its the best of the bunch, more driveable than a zm

How many M's have you driven and lived with Chris for a fair comparison?!

I know i know... Left the country for a while with work so my dreams of owning the Z4 were killed off rather quickly last time :(

never owned one.... test drove a couple when i was looking to upgrade my 2.5 to a zm, I find the 2.5 and the 3.0 easy to drive, my missus and daughter will get in it, throw the roof down (when its working) and zoom off shopping - and its a much loved member of the family - but the missus said - "if you buy the zm, it will just be yours cos i wont drive it - and we love the one we have".

we may have been unfortunate - i had a couple of nice deals to swap mine, and I really quite fancied one, but - the ones we looked at seemed heavy at the controls, juddery clutch, heavier steering. I know from reading on this forum that lots of zeds are different, and maybe i just didnt get to try a sorted zm. Anyway the higher running costs, lack of motivation from the wife made the decicion to maybe either find a "perfect 3.0" or to just put a few mods on mine.

its all a very subjective, and im sure had i had bought a zm, i would have a different opinion but if i was buying again, a 07 3.0si in black or blue with chanmpaigne interior with decent hifi would be a perfect start point and a car I dont think i would ever part with

If the 3.0 is an option I wouldn't entertain getting the 2.5 as the running costs will be pretty much the exact same but the difference in performance will be massive!

Either engine you go for its a great car and you won't be unhappy with either.
