Z4 3.0 SI performance not that impressive

I just noticed your location, I collected my car from Stratstone's in Leeds. Was quite a trek but well worth it as the car is minted.

Out of the following, my zed was quickest

Subaru Impreza WRX mk2
Honda S2000
Z4 3.0i

The Subaru felt quickest, but the zed had the edge :)

What's that?

The 2.5Si and 3.0Si are pretty much the same engine.

They use Valvetronic and valve lift to throttle the engine and so shape the torque curve.

From what I've read there are tuners now offering packages for the 2.5Si that basically give them the 3.0Si valve lift range and so bring their power and torque very close or the same as the 3.0Si engine.

Interesting. Got any links?

The 3.0si has a fundamental displacement advantage, so I find it a bit odd that it has more aggressive Valvetronic tuning than the 2.5si (it also has very similar real-world fuel economy). If it doesn't, and there is simply some headroom available in the valve lift on both models, then it follows that the re-tune should be available for the 3.0si as well.

EDIT - OE Tuning claim an additional 25HP for the 3.0si via OBD2 flash. Seems improbable otherwise a lot more people would have done it for ~ £250.

The 3.0Si is a 3.0l engine. The 2.5Si is a 3.0l engine.

The 2.5Si simply has it's valve lift limited and thus power/torque trimmed a lot. There are some other detail changes but by and large BMW just changed the mapping to limit output and badged the car 2.5.

The tuning claims are a bit iffy from any tuner in my experience hehe... but in the 2.5Si's case the boost in power/torque comes from simply opening the metaphoric tap to 100% rather than the BMW limited 80%

I can't remember who does the mod now. I was discussing the lack of a big power NA 1 series Coupe (old shape)... then someone mentioned that a tuning company now takes the 125Ci and basically makes it a 130Ci with about 265bhp or so.

Well worth looking into for all those 2.5Si owners any way as it could be a quick route to 260bhp or so :D

I'm confused now.

Stroke and bore are both less for the B25 variant compared to the B30.

Hmmmm, pretty sure it was a 3.0 engine but valve tuned to the lower output.

Maybe that is only the case in the 1 series, but not the Z4?

Dave

Ah, that'll be it. I don't think the Z4 2.5si was available in the States either, which means a lot of online content doesn't account for it.

So don't worry Dave, your 3.0 remains out of reach. :D

Ah, sorry to anyone who I misled with that statement then.

Still it's good news for the 125Ci owners though hehe :D

50 MPG 4.5 ses 0-60 :o
Have been considering these to be honest as they seem to offer many benefits strong performance usable torque & very good economy, having now sold my M3 which I owned when I first posted on this thread I can agree that the 3.0 straight six in my 330i isn't that impressive in terms of performance but I blame the weight of the 3 series for that but I do love the N52 engine very much as its silky smooth & very free revving & although its not very vocal the sound it makes is very pleasant & it has what I describe as usable power.
