Z4 3.0 SI performance not that impressive

I came from an 06 EP3 CTR and its leaps and bounds above this car performance wise. The Z has a lot more pull than the CTR which felt quite flat after driving the Z.

Have you tried the twin turbo 35i or scroll turbo 35is

Might be more like your used too.

Don't forget the z has a couple hundred kg extra which makes a big difference.

35i/35is is same engine, both N54 twin turbo. Z4 does not yet (and may not ever) have the N55 twinscroll single turbo engine.

Oh I thought the is had the combo turbo unit.

So engine wise its just the mapping and bigger radiator ?

Wonders how much BMW charge to upgrade ?

My Cooper S and Z4 are evenly matched on paper but worlds apart on the road. Frantic turbo rush Vs endless turbine smoothness, probably marginally quicker A-B in the Mini on twisty roads which is fun but the Zed is so damned easy, smooth and composed by comparison it's my tool of choice (which is ironic as someone called me a 'choice tool' in it the other day) :?

Are we seriously comparing a cooper s and a z4 3.0si ?? My type r fn2 destroyed a cooper s and the z4 is leagues in front of the type r. Ok if you remap a cooper s and add some bolt ons it might have a chance but then whats the point in comparing stock against modded ? You could charge a z4 and watch it destroy a mapped cooper s ????

My si feels like s**t off a shovel if I keep it over 4500 revs and there's still over 2000 revs to play with!!

No chance I have a mini cooper s and although fantastic the 3.0l BMW six is as sweet as a nut, no comparison na vs twin scroll turbo.

Turbos feel faster than they are they have more urge but also lag too. The 6s scream to the limiter but it needs to be above 3k.

To be fair I didn't read it as him dissing the Z4 and he did point out his cooper S was mapped so is only 30 odd BHP behind the 3.0si but is 150 KG lighter, so it would be an even match wouldn't it? Truth is A-B on real world roads 'lowly' hot hatches will embarrass many far more exotic and desirable motors, just a completely different experience.

My old factory JCW (R56) was pushing out 268bhp on the rolling road after a few mods. I then removed the cat and tweaked some other bits but sadly never did another RR.

As it was so heavily modified its not a fair comparison, but my M is the only thing that comes close to putting the same smile on my face.

The cooper s is a great car and very addictive.

Yes I think its a speed perception thing. My mini cooper s (remapped)had power and torque curve high from 3000-5000 rpm then tailed off.The 3-5k burst pinned you in your seat. The Z4 has a very long power delivery curve by the looks of it and will be quicker than it feels.
My VX220 (standard) non turbo version was frightening at full acceleration. The z4 seems a little sedate to me but 5.5 secs to 60 is Quick.
Don't get me wrong It is a lovely car and I have no regrets buying it.

Always feels faster in the passenger seat. Get someone else to take you out in the zed. You'll feel it then...

The best example of the torque effect is driving a hybrid... The prius company car from 0-30 pins you in the seats and feels seriously quick.... Until you look to the side and see pedal bikes overtake

So it's YOU who's always cutting me up then slowing me down :x

I had both VX220s the standard car never felt as fast as my 3.0si coupe. The turbo was easily as quick and more fun than the coupe, as has been said different ways of power delivery. The 3.0 is super smooth and just keeps on pulling in 4th & 5th just use all the rev range

Glad i stumbled across this thread. I was thinking the same. I came from a revvy VVTli where all the power was at the top, it 'felt' reasonably nippy, nothing, nothing, nothing, then whack, the revs would whip round. I could feel the extra torque low down in the 3.0Si but the power delivery is so linear its feels quite mild most of the time. More drivable but less exciting. It is definately one of those cars thats faster than it feels.

Do miss the forced induction surge of power from previous cars.

Funny, I understand the feeling. Even in stock trim the Mini feels quick. My daily commuter is an R58 CS and feels quicker than my Z4, but ísn't. Steering is much more direct and faster in the mini, you can't beat the go kart feeling of mini's. The Z will Always feel slow and heavy, much more of a GT after driving the Mini. On the Nurburgring north loop the Mini isn't that far behind the Z and on the sloped sections the low down torque of the turbo engine really does its magic, basicly max torque starting at only 1700 rpm. Drive a mini, feel the magic and you're sold. Still I love driving the Z4 more though :-) I actually like them both, so the 5 series is left to do the simple task of long journeys with passengers :-)

I had a toyota celica Tsport a long while back.. and imo lift isnt even comparable to the kick the si gives lower down.

Coming from a S2K before this.. that actually felt slower then my Z -but faster then the Tsport.. but i recon driven enthusiastically a S2K is equally as fast.

Yep- the Z4 does have more torque low down than the VVTLi did at the top ...but its not just power/ torque- how quickly it revs, the noise & the fact the car felt less heavy all add to sensation of speed (maybe im looking back through rose tinted specs). Without a shadow the Z4 is actually far far quicker than a Celica.

I find that the Z4 feels lots faster when your sat in the pasenger side too.

I'm new here too, my 2008 3.0si auto (M suspension, 108s etc etc) is sitting in the garage waiting for the rain to stop! Not sure I entirely agree about the performance point raised. My Z4 feel very quick, especially when in sport, it just keeps pulling at an incredible rate. Or is it me :? .
Need a little help also, I want to post some pictures but can"t find how to do so, can anyone advise please.
