Z4 3.0 Si engine ticking noise?

you need to go to Specsavers Taz

I said "how long ago", reason being BMW seemed to have changed their stance on how the rectify the situation.

I had my head replaced in April 2009 as a first fix, but from September 2009 I believe the fix was to replace the HVA's only, so was wondering when you had yoors done.

I have the same problem, there doesn't seem to be any real pattern to the noise coming and going, My local Stratstone, where I worked, told me they couldn't do anything as it was so intermittent, and could disappear after running for 10 minutes, Bummer..! it is so annoying as well as embarrassing, pulling into the petrol station at the side of a Mondeo TDCi and my engine rattling louder than his..!! Grrrrrrr...!!! :headbang:

TBH that's crap about it being intermittent, you need to go back and get them to fix it as it's a problem that need addressing.

Have they actually heard the noise?

Sorry to bring up a slightly older thread. I'm looking to buy a z4c, obviously I'm slightly worried about this problem. Does anyone know if the BMW mondial warranty will cover this issue? Thanks.

I assume you are buying an AUC which will be covered.

Guys, I went to look at a very tidy 2007 with 48k miles yesterday and I noticed straight away that it was making this noise when it was started. We went for a drive and it seemed to go. What is the consensus? It's out of warranty - would you consider this car or walk away?

Thx Nick

Just want to give a massice thumbs up to Stratstone Newcastle (Silverlink) so far on this issue

I took my car in with this intermintent tapping noise at 10am this morning. As myself and the technician approached the car (I had left the engine running becuase it was doing it at the time) he diagnosed the problem from 10ft away, turned away and took me back to the service desk to get me booked in for all the HVAs to be replaced under warranty. No messing about with bleed procedures or anything like that. Car is getting stripped down and the parts will arrive tommorow so should have it back by friday PM and if not they will give me a free courtesy car over the weekend.

....and they are also replacing my foglights due to condensation while they are at it :D

I will reserve full judgement until I have the car back and feedback then.

Andy

Went and started mine this morning and it had this lifter ticking noise, after it warmed up its dissipated, I bought it from a second hand car place not a bmw dealership... it has full main dealer service history, is there any course of action I could take to get mine fixed? 2008 reg with 103k on clock

I recorded the noise, the ticks increase consistent with revs.

At 103k miles I doubt BMW will contribute any goodwill.

Best bet would be to phone BMW UK and see what they can do for you. Phone armed with as much information as you can

Is there a PUMA for this?

I'll give them a call, see what they say.
worth a try as it is a known fault which means it is inherent in the design, so shouldn't it be covered under my statutory rights?
I'm not 100% clued up.

They will state that it does no damage, and with your mileage i cant see them wanting to know.

I would also clean your engine before you take it in. :o

Hi

New to the forum. I've got an 07 3.0Si Sport Roadster and thus far had hardly any issues with the car. I've read about the engines hydraulic lifter issues and can't work out whether mine has the issue starting or whether its just how the engine sounds.

I've posted a video up http://youtu.be/BxjkGCbT8KM this is after a 30/40 min drive home.

I can only hear the slight tick when I'm at the front of the car or have the bonet open. It sounds fine (there is a hissing noise) which only happens when the engine gets warm after a long drive.

The car is currently with Sytners having its oil service. They looked at the slight engine ticking noise and state there is nothing wrong this is the noise of the injectors. Its not as bad as some ive heard online, but concerned its the start of it. ive still got extended warranty but want to get to the bottom of it before i decide to cancel the warranty as its not cheap. Just wanted some advice as to whether this is true, and this is how the engine should sound or a fob off?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

x2

The HVA issue happens at startup, usually when the car has been left for some time like over night.
