z4 3.0 brakes to 330 brakes

Hi all, Has anyone out there upgraded the z4 front brakes to a 330 front brakes. I saw this done to a 2003 z4 3.0 but I got so excited about the car that I never asked the owner of the car any details.. I know you can do it Ijust don't know what all goes into it. I also own a 2003 3.0.. BTW, the Z4 had cross drilled rotors and the owner told me they were BMW performance rotors for a 330. does any of this make sense?

so what your telling me is that, if I went to BMW parts and ordered the cross drilled performance rotors for a 330i they would fit on my 3.0i z4?

Yes but i would not go to BMW for them, after market parts are just as good if not better and will not cost you $tealer prices, i have EBC front discs and they are superb, as for cost they were £60 cheaper than replacement BMW discs.........

I'm not so sure. Real OEM lists the 330 brakes as 325x25 and a z4 as 300x25. I thought that you also needed to get the 330 brake carrier?

The later z4 coupe (I'm assuming the convertable is the same) uses the bigger 325x25mm discs as fitted to some 330's. The earlier ones use 300mm discs.

I've got the EBC part numbers if anyone wants them.

The first post states that he owns a 2003 z4. It also appears that the 3.0si has larger front brakes than the 3.0i.

Z4 3.0 brakes are SMALLER than E46 330i brakes!!!!

I thought they were same but when i went to purchase 3.0 brakes, they were significantly smaller... 330 brakes are MUCH bigger and will help your braking

i have 2.5 so the 330 brake upgrade was definite plus!!!

330 brakes vs. 2.5 brakes(same as E46 325)

This looks like a cool mod to me then given I too have a 2003 3.0i

So going back to the zeeya's original post and now apparantly demonstrating they are different what are the parts required and if applicable part numbers - rotors, carrier, anything else?

Does this create any brake balance problems given the improved front end performance?

Can a similar upgrade be done to the rear?

The rear discs are the same size on the later cars.

OK - so long as they use the same caliper (identical part number) then the only difference could be if they put some pressure bias adjuster in the system, which I doubt so we can assume it's a reasonable step to just do the front end. Cool

So back to the question of parts and part numbers

i used to have rear-bias braking on factory 2.5 brakes... like rear was pulling/squatting when braking

but when I upgraded to the 330 front brakes, it is more forward bias because of having bigger rotors

proportioning does not need to be adjusted is what i'm trying to say

upgrade your 3.0i brake to 330 brakes.....it will be much better of an upgrade(bigger pads.bigger rotors)

That's the comforting bit I needed to know the bias would not be adversly affected.
I'll do it as soon as I get a list of parts (and time)

cj10jeeper, I thought you were done with mods??? :poke:

Just gathering information, but then again sometimes a mod comes along that seems like a winner on the cost/benefit scale. Next time I need rotors I'd go this way :D

2.5i = 286X22 won't work. Caliper part nums are different with 330.
2.5si = 300X22 won't work --//--
3.0i = 300X22 won't work --//--
3.0si = 325X25 will work

Hey blacksaphireZ, since it seems that you successfully accomplished this mod, can you tell me what parts I would need to get to complete this mod?

I nominate cj10jeeper to buy this and fit it, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity Phil :thumbsup:

Ooh that's a nice toy. Timing is not good as I've just been tapped to bridge the purchase of a Cooper S for one daughter and a Ka for the other and to even it up my wife has me down for a Spanish villa for 2 weeks in 8 days time
:rofl: - why rofl - simple I have no idea how to pay for it all....
